Joey Barton has lost weight and joined the prison football team as he awaits trial following an alleged golf course attack, according to his podcast co-host.

Barton has been in custody since March 10 after being charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

The 43-year-old is said to have attacked father-of-two Kevin Lynch, 51, at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on March 8.

Liverpool Magistrates’ Court previously heard Mr Lynch suffered injuries to his face and there is a possibility he may lose sight in one eye.

Barton pleaded not guilty to the alleged assault on Tuesday, when he appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via videolink from prison.

The former footballer’s ‘Common Sense podcast’ was recently recorded without him, with his co-hosts telling listeners about his time in custody so far.

One declared that Barton has been ‘losing a bit of f***ing timber’ after becoming the captain of the prison football team.

The podcast co-host, known as Cambo, stated that Barton has been trying to keep active while in custody and claimed he has been joking with others in jail.

‘He’s losing a bit of weight, he’s playing a bit of footy, keeping himself active. Mean machine,’ he said.

‘I can tell you a story about Joe, one of my mates, his mate is in jail with him.

‘Me mate’s mate was in the library with some of the lads, and he said Joe’s walking the library and said “boss book there for you lads”.

‘It was his autobiography. That’s definitely Joe.’

Barton was charged alongside his friend and roofer Gary O’Grady, 50, who was released on bail.

A trial date has been set for September 1, with the case expected to last seven days.

The court was previously told that Mr Lynch, a former non-league football manager and founder of special education school NexGen Academy, had been drinking with the defendants at the £1,440-a-year golf club before the alleged assault.

Prosecutor Chelsea Kearns said he and Barton, a former Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers midfielder, then appeared to have a ‘heated discussion’.

The pair went outside, where a witness said they saw a man being punched, kicked and stamped on, the court heard.

Barton allegedly warned Mr Lynch as he was attacked: ‘You should have behaved.’

A large number of police officers were scrambled to the scene at the golf club, with forensics officers cordoning off the club and scouring the grounds for clues.

Neighbours described hearing a man groaning in pain and seeing pools of blood on the street before paramedics arrived.

Barton has one England cap and also played for Newcastle, Rangers, Burnley and Marseille.

The disgraced former footballer Joey Barton has been accused of using Islamophobic slurs after he appeared in court over an alleged attack at a golf club.

Barton, 43, is said to have used racist language in the reception at HMP Liverpool following his appearance at at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on March 10.

The ex-Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers midfielder was in court charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent after he allegedly attacked father-of-two Kevin Lynch, 51, at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.

A source at HMP Liverpool told The Sun: ‘Barton was reported for “Islamophobic” comments in reception — so literally as he arrived from court and as he was being processed.

‘It means he was accused of either saying something to staff or about other inmates.’

The source also claimed that the prison is ‘full of gang members and proper gangsters’ and so Barton is likely to be moved to a different prison for his own safety.

They suggested he could be moved to Wandsworth prison in south west London instead.

‘He will have to really keep his head down and I doubt he would spend much time out of his cell if he was there,’ the source added.

Barton is said to have attacked Mr Lynch on March 8.

Liverpool Magistrates’ Court previously heard Mr Lynch suffered injuries to his face and there is a possibility he may lose sight in one eye.

On March 20, Judge David Potter refused a bail application for Barton at Liverpool Crown Court.

The majority of the bail hearing was held in private, before the judge announced his ruling in open court.

Barton, who did not attend the hearing but was represented by Simon Csoka KC, will next appear at Liverpool Crown Court on April 7.

He has been charged alongside his friend and roofer Gary O’Grady, 50, who was released on conditional bail after the magistrates’ court hearing.

A large number of police officers were scrambled to the scene at the golf club, with forensics officers cordoning off the club and scouring the grounds for clues.

Neighbours described hearing a man groaning in pain and seeing pools of blood on the street before paramedics arrived.

On the day he appeared in court Barton was ordered to pay Eni Aluko £339,000 after the football pundit sued him over a social media post.

Barton also had to pay a large sum last year to radio presenter Jeremy Vine who launched another libel case over online messages.

The former England player is appealing both cases and another for assaulting his wife for which he received a suspended sentence.
