EFL boss reveals shock at getting out of shower to see his son playing in goal for Liverpool – ‘More nervous than him’

FREDDIE WOODMAN’S dad has admitted he was “blown away” after getting out of the shower to see the keeper playing for Liverpool against Everton.

Woodman, 29, had a 32-minute cameo in the Merseyside Derby with Giorgi Mamardashvili stretchered off injured and Alisson already out.

Andy Woodman – who manages Bromley – said he was probably more nervous than his own son

And he managed to deny the Toffees as the Reds secured a dramatic 2-1 win in stoppage time thanks to Virgil van Dijk’s header.

His dad Andy – who manages Bromley and has just guided the club to League One – had been getting ready for the EFL Awards on Sunday.

And he had only just got out of the shower when he saw his son already in action after being subbed on.

It was only Woodman’s second senior appearance under Arne Slot.

He told the Daily Mail: “As much as you hope your son comes on in a Premier League game, you kind of get to the point where you don’t kind of expect it.

“Weirdly enough, I just thought I’d jump in the shower and get my suit ready to start getting ready for the EFL awards.

“And then when I came out, I was watching the game and then the ball went to Fred’s end and I couldn’t believe he was in the goal.

“I was blown away. You couldn’t have written the fact. I mean, of all the times for that to happen and all the games from his career.

“But it was a brilliant moment and it was a really proud moment for myself. I’m like, ‘Oh my God’.”

He even claimed he was “probably more nervous than Fred” but hailed his “calmness” in goal.

Woodman Snr added: “I was probably more nervous watching than Fred was actually dealing with it.

“But I thought on the whole, coming on for his Liverpool debut in a big game, it showed what I’ve seen many, many times over the years – nerves of steel and calmness.”

Woodman started his career with Newcastle but only played nine senior games for the Magpies.

After a handful of loans throughout the years to the likes of Swansea and Bournemouth, he joined Preston in 2022.

He played 138 games at Deepdale before Liverpool opted to sign him on a free transfer last summer to provide back-up to Alisson and Mamardashvili.

Speaking after the Everton game, Woodman said he was ready to play against Crystal Palace on Saturday if Mamardashvili was still unfit.

He said: “Hopefully, I want Giorgi to be fine and then Ali, the best goalkeeper in the world, I want him to come back fit.

“Listen, we will see what happens on Saturday. I will just go about my stuff this week and prepare as if I am playing.”
