“THIS FILM HITS HARD — LAUGHS AND SMILES, BUT TRAGEDIES MUST BE FACED.” — Kenny Dalglish stunned fans as he released a revealing message about his latest documentary. In a surprising move, Dalglish posted an emotional video reflecting on the balance of joy and sorrow in the story he chose to tell. His words hinted at deeply personal struggles and untold challenges behind the scenes, suggesting there was far more to the narrative than the cheerful moments onscreen. The post’s subtle references to hidden hardships sparked curiosity and speculation among viewers. Dalglish’s candid acknowledgment of difficult truths adds a layer of gravity to the film’s seemingly lighthearted tone. The unexpected transparency from such a revered figure underscores that the story is richer, darker, and more complex than many might assume.

Kenny Dalglish Reflects on Family, Football, and Life’s Greatest Challenges in Emotional Documentary

Many people may be surprised that I agreed to take part in a documentary centered around my life.

For most of my career, I have always tried to keep football and family separate. While the public knew me as a footballer, a manager, and a representative of clubs and country, my private life was something I preferred to keep behind closed doors. My family has always shared that philosophy. We have never sought attention for its own sake, and we have generally been more comfortable away from cameras than in front of them.

That is why some people may find it unexpected that I chose to participate in a film about my life and experiences.

However, after discussing the idea with my wife, Marina, and the rest of the family, I began to see the value in it. We realized that the project could be about more than football. It could become a record of our family’s journey, the people who shaped us, and the moments—both joyful and painful—that defined our lives.

That was ultimately what convinced me.

The documentary is not designed as a traditional football story. It does not simply follow a timeline from my early days at Celtic through my years with Scotland and Liverpool. It is not a highlight reel of goals, trophies, and victories.

Instead, it focuses on the people closest to me.

At its heart, the film is about family.

It tells the story of Marina, our children, and our grandchildren. It explores the relationships that have mattered most throughout my life and the values that have guided us as a family.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of making the documentary was revisiting old family footage. Watching videos from Christmas celebrations decades ago brought back memories that had almost faded with time. There were scenes from family holidays, birthdays, and milestones that reminded me just how quickly the years have passed.

Seeing our grandchildren featured alongside those older clips was particularly meaningful. I hope that years from now they will be able to watch the film and gain a better understanding of where they came from and the experiences that helped shape their family.

What pleased me most about the final result is that it presents us as we really are.

Despite the attention football brought into our lives, we have always considered ourselves ordinary people. We share many of the same hopes, concerns, and values as countless other families. We care about loyalty, respect, hard work, and looking after one another.

I think the documentary captures that side of us.

There are plenty of moments of happiness throughout the film. There are stories that make people laugh, memories from football that still bring smiles, and examples of the humor that has helped carry our family through good times and bad.

But there are also difficult chapters.

No honest account of my life could avoid discussing some of the tragedies I have witnessed.

Football has given me extraordinary opportunities, but it has also placed me close to some of the darkest moments in sporting history.

One of the earliest was the disaster at Ibrox in 1971. As a Celtic player, I was inside the stadium following an Old Firm match when 66 supporters lost their lives in a crush. At the time, many of us had little understanding of what had happened. It was only later, as details emerged, that the full scale of the tragedy became clear.

Years later came the events at Heysel Stadium in 1985.Sir Kenny at 70: Dalglish the dad, the player, the manager, the rock, the legend - The Athletic

As a Liverpool player, I found myself involved in another day that football would never forget. Thirty-nine people died before the European Cup final, victims of violence and chaos that should never have occurred.

The experience was very different from Ibrox. We were in the dressing room receiving fragmented reports and conflicting information. Every few minutes a new update arrived, making it difficult to understand what was actually happening outside.

Then came Hillsborough in 1989.

By then I was Liverpool manager, and what unfolded in Sheffield remains one of the most painful experiences of my life. Ninety-six supporters lost their lives that day, a number that later rose to ninety-seven following the death of another victim years afterward.

Unlike previous tragedies, Hillsborough unfolded directly before our eyes.

We could see the unfolding disaster from the pitch. We witnessed confusion turn into panic and panic turn into catastrophe.

No one who was there will ever forget it.

The years that followed were extraordinarily difficult. The grief experienced by the families was unimaginable, and everyone associated with Liverpool Football Club tried to support them in whatever way possible.

For me, the responsibility extended far beyond football.

I attended funerals, visited grieving relatives, and listened to stories from families whose lives had been changed forever. Nothing could remove their pain, but I believed it was important to stand beside them and offer whatever support I could.

Even now, decades later, those memories remain powerful.

When filmmakers suggested revisiting Hillsborough during production of the documentary, I found myself unable to do it.

I simply could not return.

Instead, I traveled to a hillside overlooking the stadium. That was as close as I wanted to get.

The emotions associated with that place remain profound.

Yet as painful as Hillsborough was for me, I have always understood that my experience was insignificant compared to the suffering endured by the families who lost loved ones.

Their burden was infinitely greater.

When I look back over my life as a whole, however, I consider myself fortunate.

Like many children, my earliest dreams were simple. I wanted good health, happiness, meaningful work, a family, and the opportunity to build a decent life.

I was fortunate enough to achieve those things.

Football gave me opportunities beyond anything I could have imagined. I played for Celtic, Liverpool, and Scotland. I experienced unforgettable moments and formed lifelong friendships.

More importantly, football allowed me to become part of two remarkable cities: Glasgow and Liverpool.

The warmth, loyalty, and generosity of people in both places have enriched my life immeasurably.

Over the years, some people have suggested that my contributions to football and charitable causes deserve special recognition.

While I am grateful for such comments, I have never focused on awards or titles.

I have simply tried to do the right thing.

If people appreciate that, then I am humbled by their kindness.

When it comes to role models within our family, however, there is one person who deserves more admiration than anyone else.

That person is Marina.

Her strength, compassion, and determination have inspired all of us. Through her charitable work supporting cancer care, she has helped raise millions of pounds and improved the lives of countless patients and families.

She has also been the foundation of our household.

When we moved to Liverpool, she was only twenty-three years old. We already had two young children, and she faced the challenge of building a new life in an unfamiliar city while I focused on football.

She handled it with remarkable grace.

The support she provided allowed me to devote myself fully to my career, knowing that our family was in safe hands.

Whatever success I achieved on the pitch, much of it was made possible by her sacrifices away from it.

Ultimately, that is what I hope people take from the documentary.

Yes, football is part of the story. So are trophies, matches, and memorable moments.

But the real message is about family, resilience, kindness, and gratitude.

Life contains triumphs and heartbreaks, laughter and loss. What matters most is how we face those experiences and the people we share them with.

If the film succeeds in showing that, then it will have achieved exactly what we hoped it would.Kenny Dalglish with wife Marina during the Kenny Dalglish Stand opening event at Anfield (PA Wire)
