Xabi Alonso Believes Morgan Rogers Can Make Immediate Chelsea Impact After £117m Record Transfer

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has expressed his confidence that Morgan Rogers can make an immediate contribution at Stamford Bridge after completing his record-breaking £117 million move from Aston Villa.

The England international became the most expensive British signing in football history after Chelsea secured his services, beating competition from Arsenal, who had also shown strong interest in the attacking midfielder.

Rogers is currently enjoying a break following his involvement with England at the World Cup, but Alonso has made it clear that players returning later due to their extended tournament commitments must quickly prepare themselves for the new Premier League season.

Chelsea are set to begin their campaign against Fulham, and Alonso expects all of his late-returning stars to be ready for the opening fixture.

Speaking about Rogers for the first time since Chelsea completed the deal, Alonso praised the signing and explained why the club identified him as a priority target.

“Everyone who arrives later because they went deep into the World Cup will be ready,” Alonso said. “We have several players in that situation, so they need to prepare themselves. It is a great signing.”

The Spanish coach explained that Chelsea had been monitoring Rogers for a considerable period and believed his qualities matched exactly what the team needed.

“In that position, we needed an important player, and I don’t think there were many better options than Morgan Rogers,” Alonso said.

“We had followed him for a long time. He is going to become a very important player for this team. Fortunately, everything moved quickly and now Morgan is with us.”

Alonso highlighted Rogers’ ability to adapt quickly as one of the reasons Chelsea were so eager to complete the transfer. The manager believes the England star has the talent and mentality required to make an instant impact rather than needing a long adjustment period.

“You need players who can have an almost immediate influence,” Alonso explained. “I am sure Morgan will not need much time to adapt to the club, the system, and his new teammates. That was exactly the type of player we wanted — a top-quality player, and Morgan is certainly one of them.”

Alonso made his comments while speaking from Sydney, Australia, where Chelsea are currently preparing for pre-season matches against Western Sydney Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur.

The signing of Rogers is expected to be followed by another defensive addition, with Chelsea reportedly close to completing a £52 million deal for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix.

The announcement of Lacroix’s arrival is expected soon, further strengthening Alonso’s squad as he looks to build a competitive team capable of challenging at the highest level.

When asked about Chelsea’s transfer plans and the potential arrival of Lacroix, Alonso stressed that the club’s goal is to create a balanced squad with both technical ability and the right mentality.

“We want to build a competitive team,” Alonso said. “That is the process we are going through. We have great quality and great talent, but we also need to understand what it takes to compete in the Premier League.”

The former Bayer Leverkusen manager explained that having talented individuals alone is not enough. Chelsea need players who can combine ability with determination and consistency.

“We want a squad with the right balance between quality and mentality,” he said. “Those two things have to work together.”

Although the summer transfer window remains open for several weeks, Alonso admitted that Chelsea still need to evaluate different situations and positions before making further decisions.

“We have a plan and an idea,” he said. “We need to assess things at the right moments. We cannot say exactly what will happen, but some things may still happen.”

While Chelsea have been active in strengthening their squad, Alonso acknowledged that departures will also be a major focus before the transfer window closes.

The club’s sporting department is currently working alongside the squad in Australia, but once Lacroix joins, Chelsea will have an extremely crowded defensive department.

The French defender would become the 10th centre-back currently connected with the first-team squad. Chelsea already have Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Aaron Anselmino, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Mamadou Sarr, Josh Acheampong, Axel Disasi, and Benoit Badiashile competing for defensive roles.

Alonso admitted that further changes are likely before deadline day.

“We know there will probably still be some movement,” he said. “We need to remain flexible and act quickly when necessary.”

However, the manager insisted that Chelsea have a clear strategy and will not make decisions without careful consideration.

“The main thing is that we have a clear idea and a clear plan that we have built,” Alonso explained. “Of course, things can change until the final day of the market.”

Looking ahead to the new season, Alonso avoided setting specific targets but said Chelsea’s ambition was to compete as strongly as possible.

“I don’t want to speak too early about our objectives,” he said. “We want to have a good season and deserve to finish as high as possible.”

To achieve that, Alonso believes Chelsea must continue developing under his leadership while integrating new players and introducing new tactical ideas.

“We need to work hard, improve this team, and adapt with new players, a new coach, and new ideas,” he said. “So far, we have had positive feelings.”

One area Alonso is particularly keen to improve is Chelsea’s physical performance. The club covered the shortest distance of any Premier League team last season, a statistic that contrasts sharply with Alonso’s previous Bayer Leverkusen side, who ranked among Europe’s hardest-working teams.

The Chelsea manager believes improving effort, intensity, and discipline will be essential if the team wants to compete in England’s top division.

“We need to compete,” Alonso said. “We need to have good energy. We need to run. We need to work hard.”

He emphasised that commitment and sacrifice are unavoidable requirements in the Premier League.

“Those sacrifices are compulsory in every Premier League match,” Alonso added. “Winning every game is difficult, and we need to prepare ourselves for that challenge.”

Chelsea will discover their progress when they begin the new campaign against Fulham on August 24.

With major investment already made in players such as Rogers and further reinforcements expected, Alonso is hoping his new-look Chelsea side can quickly develop into a more competitive and consistent team.
