DREADFUL, AND THEY OFFERED NOTHING: Alan Shearer has delivered a brutal verdict on Manchester United after Michael Carrick’s side suffered a humiliating 2-0 defeat at Hull, accusing the Red Devils of looking unfit and exposing one glaring weakness. But Shearer’s most damning criticism focused on the area where United’s stars appeared completely powerless, raising fresh fears over Carrick’s plans.

Alan Shearer Labels Manchester United ‘Dreadful’ and ‘Not Fit’ After Opening Defeat at Hull

Alan Shearer delivered a scathing assessment of Manchester United’s performance after their 2-0 opening-day defeat at newly promoted Hull City, describing Michael Carrick’s side as “dreadful” in every department and questioning whether the players were physically prepared for the intensity of Premier League football. Goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy secured a historic win for the hosts and left United searching for answers after a display that lacked energy, clarity and threat.

Shearer, speaking on Match of the Day, did not soften his language. “Man United were dreadful in all positions I thought, particularly upfront, they offered nothing,” he said. “At times I struggled to work out what they were trying to do. [There is] so much to work on, so much to improve, I know it was the first game of the season but there was without a doubt a lack of energy, they just didn’t look fit, Manchester United. There was only one team who were going to win that today from the very first minute, you saw the energy, you saw the intensity. That would be the worrying thing – you know that as a team going away from home to a newly promoted team, you know what you’re going to get and you have to match them as a minimum and Man Utd didn’t today. They couldn’t live with them.”

Fitness and Intensity Under Scrutiny

The former England striker’s most damaging observation concerned physical condition. United, he argued, were unable to match the tempo set by a Hull side clearly primed for the occasion. In an away fixture against a newly promoted opponent, the minimum requirement is to equal the home team’s urgency; Shearer’s view was that United failed even that basic test. The absence of attacking cohesion compounded the problem. With little penetration or sustained pressure, the forwards offered scant outlet, and the side as a whole struggled to impose any coherent plan.

Such criticism carries weight coming from a pundit who rarely indulges in theatrical overstatement. Shearer’s focus on energy and fitness will resonate with supporters who watched United surrender midfield ground and second balls throughout the afternoon. Pre-season schedules and the balance between recovery and sharpness are perennial early-season topics; a performance this flat on the opening weekend ensures those topics will dominate discussion until the next match provides fresh evidence.

Carrick’s Measured Response

Michael Carrick, taking charge of his first league game since being confirmed as permanent head coach after a successful interim spell following Ruben Amorim’s departure, resisted any urge to dramatise the result. “We haven’t lost many games in six, seven months,” he said. “So again, I get it, we’ve lost today and I understand there’s questions to be asked, but it doesn’t mean everything’s wrong because we’ve lost a game. We’ve done a lot of good things and we did some good things today, but it gets lost, and I understand it’ll get lost, but it doesn’t get lost from our point of view. There’s definitely issues playing against different systems, so we have got to find the answers for that. But just because we lose one game it doesn’t mean that everything needs to be dissected and it’s wrong from our point of view.”

Carrick was equally careful to separate outward calm from inward disappointment. “I’m talking to you quite calm, but I’m not exactly calm inside and enjoying the day, you know? So there’s a big difference. I played here for a long time. You don’t get to play here for a long time without just going day by day, the results, the ups and downs, but you just carry on as normal. It’s 100% not that; trust me, it’s not that. It just doesn’t mean that we all have to shout and scream and come out and create some chaos just because of it. Inside we’re hurting. The boys know we need to get better, but the calmness doesn’t mean that there’s no emotion in it, for sure.”

The message was one of continuity and controlled response. Carrick acknowledged tactical questions raised by Hull’s system, accepted that standards must rise, and rejected the idea that a single defeat invalidates the work of the previous six or seven months. At the same time he made clear that the dressing room is not treating the afternoon as a minor inconvenience.

Tactical Questions

Hull’s ability to disrupt United suggested specific preparation for the visitors’ patterns of play. Carrick’s admission that the side encountered “issues playing against different systems” points to a need for greater adaptability in build-up, defensive transitions and the occupation of spaces between lines. Newly promoted teams often succeed in early fixtures by matching physicality and exploiting any complacency; United’s failure to anticipate and neutralise that approach left them chasing the game once the first goal went in.

The blank in attack will particularly concern the coaching staff. When a side offers “nothing” in the final third, as Shearer put it, midfield control and defensive organisation come under greater strain. Service, movement and the willingness to run beyond the ball all appeared deficient. Correcting that output is an obvious priority before the next fixture.

Context of Carrick’s Tenure

Carrick earned the permanent role through results and stability during his interim period. That credit remains in the bank, yet opening-day defeats have a habit of amplifying doubt. Supporters who accepted the appointment on the basis of recent improvement will want rapid evidence that the Hull performance was an aberration rather than a symptom of deeper physical or tactical shortcomings. Carrick’s refusal to panic is consistent with his public persona; the players must now supply the on-pitch justification for that stance.

What Comes Next

United’s immediate task is to respond with the energy and clarity missing on Humberside. Training-ground work on pressing triggers, distances between units and attacking combinations will be scrutinised for signs of adjustment. Fitness data, already a point of external debate after Shearer’s comments, will be monitored internally with added urgency. Hull, for their part, will attempt to bottle the intensity that earned them three points and a memorable headline.

Shearer’s verdict has framed the conversation: dreadful across the pitch, empty up front, and worryingly short of the required physical level. Carrick’s reply has framed the response: disappointment without hysteria, recognition of problems without abandonment of recent progress. Between those two positions sits a squad that must prove, match by match, that the opening afternoon was a false start rather than an accurate measure of their readiness for the season ahead. The next performance will not erase the defeat, but it will indicate whether the criticism has been absorbed and converted into something sharper.
