STERLING’S JAIL FEAR: Raheem Sterling is facing the possibility of a two-year prison sentence after being charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide following the crash of his £270,000 Lamborghini. The former England star was arrested at the scene, but the potential punishment hanging over him has now added a shocking new chapter to the footballer’s troubled legal saga.

Raheem Sterling Charged with Dangerous Driving and Possessing Nitrous Oxide After Lamborghini Crash

Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation following a crash involving his £270,000 Lamborghini on the M3 in May, police have confirmed. The 31-year-old former England international, who was arrested at the scene, also faces a charge of failing to provide a specimen. If convicted of dangerous driving he could face up to two years in prison. He is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on 15 September.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said the charges relate to a single-vehicle collision on the M3 southbound near the Minley Interchange on 28 May 2026. Officers were called just before 9am to reports of a Lamborghini swerving across the carriageway. According to the force, Sterling, from Berkshire, has been charged with dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, and failing to provide a specimen after the incident.

Dashcam Footage and Witness Account

Footage obtained by the Daily Mail appeared to show a black luxury SUV drifting across all three lanes of the motorway as other drivers took evasive action. The driver appeared to be inhaling from a balloon, a method commonly associated with the recreational use of nitrous oxide, sometimes referred to as “hippy crack.” Minutes later the vehicle allegedly struck the motorway barriers and Sterling was detained by police.

A motorist who captured the earlier swerving on dashcam described the sequence to the Mail. “I was in the middle lane and without warning a black Lamborghini pulled in front of me, forcing me to slow,” the witness said. “I dropped back. I’m a driving instructor after all. The car turned back into the inside lane but the driver put his foot down and veered right across all three lanes and seemed to just avoid hitting the central reservation. It’s a powerful car and he could have easily gone through the central reservation if he’d hit the accelerator. A van driver behind him was forced to brake and he then shot off again and turned back across three lanes again into the inside lane.”

The witness said the footage was recorded at approximately 8.45am near Junction 4a southbound. “The motorist was all over the place but I had no idea it was Raheem Sterling until I saw that he’d been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving by the Minley Interchange. I like Raheem but as a driving instructor I’m very concerned. He could have easily caused himself — and others — a great deal of harm. He was very fortunate that he did not do so.”

Career Decline and Personal Strain

The charges arrive at a low point in Sterling’s professional life. Once one of English football’s most dynamic attackers, he has been without a club since his short spell at Feyenoord ended in the summer. He left Chelsea in January after falling out of the first-team picture and not playing since May 2024. A subsequent move to the Dutch side yielded only eight appearances and no goals before the arrangement concluded.

A source close to the player described the cumulative pressure of the past two years. “The psychological strain that has been put on him is immeasurable. Isolated. The second he touches a ball, being told he’s a flop and he’s finished. Mocked. Heckled. He moved to the Netherlands to escape and rediscover his love for the game but the negativity followed. It’s been an extremely tough couple of years for him and this incident encompasses that.” Sterling’s representatives declined to comment when contacted after the crash.

From Premier League Star to Court Date

Sterling’s career trajectory underlines the distance travelled. After emerging at Liverpool as a teenager he joined Manchester City in 2015 and collected ten major trophies, including four Premier League titles. He won 82 caps for England, with his final appearance coming in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final defeat by France. A £50million move to Chelsea in 2022 marked the beginning of a sharp decline, encompassing reduced playing time, a loan spell at Arsenal that failed to revive his form, and the brief, unproductive stint in Rotterdam.

The legal process will now determine the outcome of the May incident. Sterling has been charged, not convicted, and is entitled to contest the allegations in court. The combination of a high-performance vehicle, alleged erratic driving on a busy motorway, and the additional charge relating to nitrous oxide has nonetheless placed one of English football’s most recognisable names under intense public scrutiny once again.

What Comes Next

On 15 September, Sterling is scheduled to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court to face the three charges. Prosecutors will present the evidence gathered by Hampshire Police, including any dashcam material, officer statements and toxicology-related information arising from the failure to provide a specimen. The defence will have the opportunity to respond. Until then, the former England winger remains a free agent in footballing terms and a defendant in the eyes of the law.

Sterling, here playing for Feyenoord in February, has been without a team since the summer

For a player who once embodied the attacking verve of a generation, the coming weeks will be defined not by transfer speculation or international recalls but by the sober machinery of the criminal justice system. The crash on the M3, the charges that followed, and the personal difficulties described by those close to him have converged into the most serious off-field challenge of his career. The court will decide the legal consequences. The longer question of whether Sterling can rebuild any kind of professional future remains unanswered.
