TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD’S FRESH SETBACK: Trent Alexander-Arnold has faced a new challenge after Jose Mourinho made a key decision involving his future prospects, with one unexpected move now drawing attention from fans and observers. But one little-known detail behind the situation has revealed a surprising new layer to the pressure surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s career path and the decisions that could shape what happens next.

Trent Alexander-Arnold Faces Another Setback as Jose Mourinho Continues to Prefer Denzel DumfriesTrent Alexander-Arnold sent an early message Jose Mourinho can't forget

Trent Alexander-Arnold has suffered another setback at Real Madrid after new head coach Jose Mourinho once again chose Denzel Dumfries ahead of the former Liverpool defender in the starting lineup.

Alexander-Arnold remained among the substitutes as Real Madrid produced an emphatic 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night. The result gave Madrid a perfect start to their home campaign in the 2026-27 La Liga season, but the evening was less encouraging for the England international, who was not introduced during the match.

Mourinho’s decision to select Dumfries at right-back for the second consecutive league fixture appears to provide an early indication of how he currently views the competition for the position.

Real Madrid began their league campaign with a 2-1 away victory against Espanyol on Saturday. Alexander-Arnold was given only a brief opportunity in that match, coming onto the pitch for the final 10 minutes.

Four days later, he remained on the bench for the entire contest against Sociedad.

The situation represents a significant change for Alexander-Arnold, who arrived in Madrid with huge expectations after leaving Liverpool. The defender had spent his entire senior career at Anfield before allowing his contract to run down and making the move to Spain.

Real Madrid eventually signed him on a free transfer last summer, although the Spanish giants reportedly paid Liverpool around $11.4 million to secure his release before his contract officially expired.

His first season in Spain, however, did not develop as many expected. Madrid endured a disappointing campaign without major silverware, while Alexander-Arnold had to adapt to a new league, a different tactical environment and increased competition for his position.

Initially, he worked under Xabi Alonso, another former Liverpool player who had returned to Madrid as head coach. After Alonso’s departure, Alexander-Arnold subsequently played under Alvaro Arbeloa, another figure with strong Liverpool connections. Arbeloa has since moved to Fulham.

Now, however, Alexander-Arnold is working under Mourinho, whose return to Real Madrid this summer has brought another significant change.

So far, Mourinho appears to have placed his faith in Dumfries as his preferred right-back.

Madrid signed the Dutch international from Inter Milan during the summer after activating his reported $23.3 million release clause. Dumfries has immediately been handed a starting role in both of the club’s opening La Liga matches.

That consistency is likely to concern Alexander-Arnold, particularly because his greatest strength has traditionally been his passing and ability to create opportunities from deep positions.

There was also a notable moment during his short appearance against Espanyol that suggested Mourinho was unhappy with one of the defender’s decisions.

Alexander-Arnold attempted a pass late in the match, but his delivery was inaccurate and the ball went out of play. Mourinho reacted visibly from the touchline before returning to his seat on the bench, appearing frustrated by the mistake.Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jose Mourinho and a crucial second season at Real Madrid - The Athletic

One isolated error would normally have little significance at this stage of the season, but when combined with Mourinho’s decision to select Dumfries in both opening matches, it has inevitably attracted attention.

The campaign is still in its early stages, and Alexander-Arnold has plenty of time to fight his way back into Mourinho’s plans. Nevertheless, the initial evidence suggests that he may have to work hard to convince the Portuguese manager that he deserves to be Madrid’s first-choice option at right-back.

Alexander-Arnold remains under contract with Real Madrid until 2031, meaning the club has made a significant long-term commitment to the defender. However, his current situation means he has now experienced a difficult transition under three different head coaches since arriving in Spain.

Despite the defender’s limited involvement, Real Madrid have made an impressive start to the new season.

Wednesday’s victory over Real Sociedad was particularly convincing, with Kylian Mbappe taking centre stage. The French forward scored three goals during the match, helping Madrid establish an early statement of intent in their attempt to reclaim the La Liga championship from rivals Barcelona.

Mbappe’s hat-trick was completed over a 40-minute spell and immediately placed him at the top of the early Golden Boot standings.

Mourinho was understandably delighted with the performance of his star attacker, although he admitted that he generally prefers to discuss the team rather than single out individual players.

“There is one thing that I don’t like very much, but I have to do it,” Mourinho said after the match.

The Madrid manager explained that he does not particularly enjoy highlighting individual performers because football should ultimately be about collective performances.

However, he could not avoid praising Mbappe after such an influential display.

Mourinho described the forward’s performance as extraordinary, highlighting his finishing ability and creativity. He also pointed to Mbappe’s capacity to drop deeper when Madrid encounter difficulties in building attacks.

According to Mourinho, Mbappe can move into deeper areas, combine with Jude Bellingham and help Madrid progress up the pitch while creating dangerous attacking situations.

The manager was also keen to emphasise that Madrid’s success against Sociedad was not simply the result of one outstanding individual.

Although Mbappe’s three goals naturally dominated the headlines, Mourinho believed the team as a whole performed strongly.

He praised the players for remaining united even when the match became difficult during the opening half. In his view, Madrid maintained their collective identity throughout the game before producing an even stronger performance after the interval.

The victory therefore provided plenty of positives for Mourinho, but Alexander-Arnold’s situation remains an issue worth watching.

The former Liverpool academy graduate has moved to one of the biggest clubs in world football expecting to compete for major honours and establish himself as a key part of the team.

Instead, his early involvement under Mourinho has been limited.

The arrival of Dumfries has made the competition even tougher. Unlike Alexander-Arnold, the Dutch defender offers Mourinho a different physical and tactical profile, potentially making him particularly attractive to a manager who places great importance on defensive structure, intensity and balance.

Alexander-Arnold’s renowned passing range and attacking creativity remain valuable qualities, but Mourinho may demand greater consistency and defensive reliability from his full-backs.

For now, the England international will have to remain patient and take advantage of any opportunity that comes his way.

The season is still young, and two matches are certainly not enough to determine a player’s long-term position within the squad. However, Mourinho’s first two selections have delivered a clear message: Dumfries currently appears to have the advantage in the battle for the right-back position.

Alexander-Arnold will therefore need to respond positively if he wants to change the manager’s thinking.

With Real Madrid already making a strong start and Mbappe firing on all cylinders, Mourinho will have plenty of reasons to maintain his current approach.

For Alexander-Arnold, the challenge is now to prove that he can become an essential part of that winning formula rather than remain an expensive and highly talented option waiting for opportunities from the bench.Trent Alexander-Arnold was left on the bench during Real Madrid's latest La Liga game
