Kai Rooney Set to Wear Puma Boots for Manchester United as Academy Rule No Longer Applies

Kai Rooney will finally be allowed to wear his sponsored Puma football boots while representing Manchester United after progressing to a higher academy age group, bringing an end to a restriction that had previously prevented him from using the footwear despite his endorsement deal with the sportswear company.

The 16-year-old forward, who is the eldest son of Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney, had been unable to wear his preferred boots while playing for the club’s Under-16 side because of an academy policy requiring every player in that age category to use identical boots. The rule was introduced to create equality among young players and prevent differences in equipment from highlighting financial disparities between families.

However, the situation changes ahead of the new campaign. Because Kai turned 16 before the academy’s August 31 age-group cutoff, he is no longer eligible to compete for the Under-16s and will instead play for an older squad, where the footwear regulation is not enforced. As a result, he will now be free to wear his Puma boots during matches without breaking club rules.

Kai signed a sponsorship agreement with Puma in 2022 when he was just 12 years old, making him one of the youngest footballers to secure a personal endorsement with a major sportswear brand. Despite the commercial partnership, Manchester United’s academy policy meant that he had to set aside his sponsored boots whenever he represented the Under-16 team.

Wayne Rooney previously discussed the unusual situation while appearing on The Smith Brothers: Not A Podcast. The former England captain explained that although his son was officially associated with Puma, the academy’s regulations took priority at Under-16 level.

According to Rooney, all academy players in that age group are required to wear the same model of boots regardless of personal sponsorships or individual preferences. He said he appreciated the policy because it helps create a level playing field for youngsters from different financial backgrounds. Not every family can afford expensive or fashionable boots, and requiring identical footwear removes any visible differences between teammates.

Rooney praised the club’s approach, describing it as a positive initiative that encourages equality and team spirit among young players. At the same time, he noted that the restriction no longer applies once academy players move into older age groups. Kai had already experienced that difference after making several appearances for Manchester United’s Under-18 team, where he was permitted to wear his Puma boots.

The former United striker also expressed satisfaction with his son’s development, saying the teenager had been progressing well despite the pressure that naturally comes with carrying one of the most famous surnames in English football.

Kai enjoyed another important milestone during the previous season by featuring six times for Manchester United’s Under-18 squad. He made his debut for the team at just 15 years of age, helping the side earn a narrow 1-0 victory over Everton last August.

That appearance underlined the club’s belief in his potential, with coaches promoting him above his normal age group to gain valuable experience against older opposition. Throughout the season, Kai continued to impress with his technical ability, movement in attack and eye for goal.

Unfortunately, his promising campaign came to an early end after suffering an injury in March. The setback ruled him out for the remainder of the season, including Manchester United’s FA Youth Cup final against rivals Manchester City. Without Kai available, United narrowly lost the final 2-1, ending their hopes of lifting another youth trophy.

Growing up as the son of Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer has inevitably placed Kai under constant attention. Wayne Rooney enjoyed one of the most successful careers in the club’s history, scoring an incredible 253 goals across 559 appearances while winning numerous domestic and international honours.
