ENZO FERNANDEZ’S SURPRISING TWIST: Enzo Fernandez has completed a £125m move to Manchester City, with his claim that he had “dreamed of joining a big club” now drawing significant attention. But one unexpected detail surrounding his departure has revealed a striking new layer to his Chelsea exit, as both Fernandez and Enzo Maresca have notably avoided referring to the Blues by name, adding another intriguing dimension to the transfer story.

ENZO FERNANDEZ’S SURPRISING TWIST: The Chelsea Exit That Has Raised Eyebrows After £125m Manchester City Move

Fernandez comments are likely to anger Chelsea fans, as he also referred to the Blues only as his 'previous club'

Enzo Fernandez has completed a sensational £125 million transfer to Manchester City, but the Argentine midfielder’s first comments following the move have already sparked plenty of discussion among Chelsea supporters.

The 25-year-old made headlines after describing his move to City as a dream come true, particularly his ambition to play for a club “as big” as the reigning Premier League giants. However, it was not simply his praise of his new surroundings that attracted attention. One subtle detail in his comments has added another fascinating layer to the circumstances surrounding his departure from Chelsea.

Despite spending several seasons at Stamford Bridge and previously expressing his affection for the club, Fernandez noticeably avoided mentioning Chelsea by name when discussing his career and his reunion with Enzo Maresca. Instead, he repeatedly referred to the London side as his “previous club”.

That decision has raised eyebrows, particularly given the emotional message Fernandez published shortly before his departure in an apparent attempt to explain his decision to Chelsea fans.

Fernandez had followed Enzo Maresca as not referring to Chelsea by name after joining City

Fernandez’s transfer to Manchester City was completed on deadline day, with the £125m agreement matching the British transfer record established by Liverpool when they signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle last summer.

The move represents another major chapter in Fernandez’s career, which has developed rapidly since his arrival in English football. However, his relationship with Chelsea supporters had already become complicated before the transfer was completed.

The Argentine midfielder previously caused frustration among the Stamford Bridge faithful after appearing to flirt with a potential move to Real Madrid last season. His actions reportedly resulted in disciplinary consequences, with Chelsea suspending him for two matches.

That episode had already created questions about Fernandez’s long-term commitment to the club. His eventual decision to leave has therefore added further fuel to the debate surrounding his time in west London.

Before completing his move to City, Fernandez attempted to address Chelsea supporters directly through social media. In an emotional statement, he acknowledged that his decision had been difficult while insisting that he had developed a genuine connection with the club.

Fernandez admitted that he had not been in a “good place” and suggested that leaving Chelsea was ultimately a personal and professional decision that he felt compelled to make.

He also tried to acknowledge the disappointment that supporters might feel.

“Life is about making decisions, and right now I find myself having to make one of those difficult decisions,” Fernandez wrote.

He went on to stress that his feelings for Chelsea had not simply disappeared because he was leaving.

“I have grown incredibly fond of this club. Chelsea will always have a place in my thoughts and, above all, in my heart,” he added.

Fernandez also appeared to show an understanding of why Chelsea fans might struggle to accept his decision.

“But I also understand how football works. I know how passionate you are, because I am the same. And if I were in your position, I would probably be thinking the same way.”

Those words appeared designed to soften the impact of his departure. Yet, following his move to Manchester, another curious detail emerged.

Fernandez was not the only member of the new City set-up to avoid directly mentioning Chelsea.

Maresca, who had previously worked with Fernandez, also appeared to distance himself from explicitly naming his former club when discussing his arrival at Manchester City. The Italian manager referred to Chelsea as a “different club” rather than directly mentioning the Blues.

Fernandez followed a similar approach when talking about his reunion with Maresca.

Rather than saying Chelsea, the midfielder described the Premier League club as his “previous club”.

“He is a top manager, honestly, I had him at my previous club,” Fernandez said.

The choice of wording may appear insignificant, but given the circumstances of Fernandez’s departure and his previous attempts to reassure Chelsea supporters, it has inevitably attracted attention.

At the same time, Fernandez was extremely enthusiastic when discussing his new club.

“I’m really happy to be here,” he said. “I always dreamed of being at a club as big as City.”

The midfielder described the transfer as an emotional moment for both himself and his family, particularly because of the importance of the move at this stage of his career.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity. It’s a very emotional moment for me and my family, to take this step at 25 years old, in a football career that I always dreamed of.”

Fernandez also made it clear that he had been impressed by the scale and ambition of Manchester City almost immediately after arriving.

“I’m so happy to be here, enjoying these first few hours I’ve had at the club. I can already see just how big it is and, we will enjoy ourselves and win lots of things together.”

His ambitions with City are equally clear. Fernandez understands that expectations at the Etihad are extremely high, and he believes the club’sFernandez had followed Enzo Maresca as not referring to Chelsea by name after joining City
