Wayne Rooney has spoken with striking honesty about the darkest period of his life, revealing that he believes his wife, Coleen Rooney, played a crucial role in saving him from the destructive impact of alcohol during his playing career.
The former Manchester United and England striker, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the club’s history and its all-time leading goalscorer, admitted that behind the success, trophies, and global fame, he was quietly struggling with serious personal issues that very few people ever saw.
Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Rooney opened up about how his relationship with alcohol spiraled during his peak playing years, describing a pattern of behaviour that he now looks back on with regret and disbelief.
“I honestly believe if she weren’t there I’d be dead,” Rooney said, referring to his wife Coleen. “She’s kept me on the right path for over 20 years.”
Rooney explained that during his career at Manchester United, he often lived a double life. On the pitch, he was delivering match-winning performances, scoring goals, and playing at the highest level of football. But off the pitch, he was battling an increasingly unhealthy relationship with alcohol that he felt unable to control.
He admitted there were periods when he would drink heavily for days at a time, even while still expected to train and perform at elite level.
“I was struggling massively,” he said. “I didn’t think I could turn to anyone. I didn’t want to put that burden on people, so I kept it to myself.”
Rooney described a cycle that became difficult to break. He would go out with friends, intending to enjoy a single night, but those nights often turned into extended periods of drinking that lasted for 48 hours or more. Despite this, he would still manage to return to training sessions and competitive matches, sometimes performing at an elite level shortly after.
One of the most shocking admissions came when he revealed how he tried to hide his condition from teammates and coaching staff. Rooney explained that he would arrive at training after heavy drinking sessions and attempt to disguise it using eye drops, chewing gum, and aftershave.
From the outside, he appeared focused and professional. Internally, however, he was struggling to maintain control over a lifestyle that was becoming increasingly damaging.
Despite his personal battles, Rooney continued to perform at an extraordinary level for Manchester United. He scored crucial goals, helped the club win multiple Premier League titles, and became a central figure under Sir Alex Ferguson. Yet behind those achievements was a growing dependence that he now recognises as a serious problem.
Rooney admitted that during that time, he felt isolated and unable to open up about what he was going through. The pressure of being a global football star, combined with expectations from fans, media, and the club, made it difficult for him to seek help.
“I didn’t really want to tell anyone,” he said. “I didn’t want people to think differently of me or see me as weak.”
It was during this period that Coleen Rooney became a stabilizing force in his life.
Rooney credits her with stepping in at a time when he lacked control, helping him manage his behaviour and gradually guiding him toward a healthier lifestyle. He described her influence not as judgmental, but as firm, consistent, and necessary.
“She’s done it for 20-odd years,” he explained. “She’s managed me because I needed managing.”
Friends close to the couple have often spoken about Coleen’s strong personality and her ability to keep Rooney grounded despite the chaos that surrounded fame, money, and intense media attention. According to Rooney, that stability was essential in preventing his situation from becoming far worse.
The former striker also reflected on how easily things could have gone in a different direction if he had not had that support system in place.
He suggested that without Coleen’s presence, structure, and intervention, his life could have taken a tragic turn. His comments carried a sense of gratitude but also reflection on how vulnerable he was during that period of his career.
“I honestly believe if she weren’t there I’d be dead,” he repeated, emphasizing just how severe he believes the situation had become.
Rooney’s revelations also shed light on the hidden pressures faced by elite athletes, particularly during the early 2000s and 2010s, when mental health and addiction issues were not discussed as openly in professional sport as they are today.
At the time, football culture often emphasized toughness, resilience, and performance above personal wellbeing. Many players were expected to deal with problems privately without external support.
Rooney’s story now adds to a growing number of former players speaking publicly about the mental and emotional struggles they experienced during their careers.
Despite those difficult years, Rooney ultimately managed to maintain an extraordinary football career. He became Manchester United’s record goalscorer, won numerous domestic and international trophies, and later transitioned into management and punditry.
However, his recent reflections suggest that his greatest victory may not have been on the pitch, but in overcoming the personal challenges that once threatened to derail his life.
He also spoke about how his relationship with alcohol eventually changed over time, particularly as he matured, started a family, and began to understand the consequences of his actions more clearly.
Rooney acknowledged that part of his ability to move forward came from accepting that he needed help and allowing those closest to him to support him.
Coleen’s role, he said, was not about control in a negative sense, but about protection — helping him navigate situations that could have otherwise spiraled further out of control.

Today, Rooney looks back on those years with a mixture of honesty and gratitude. While he does not hide the mistakes he made, he also emphasizes how important it was to have someone beside him who refused to let him lose himself completely.
His story stands as a reminder that even the most successful athletes in the world can struggle privately, and that support systems — particularly family — can play a decisive role in shaping the course of a life.
For Rooney, that support came from Coleen, whom he now credits not just as his wife, but as someone who helped keep him alive during one of the most turbulent chapters of his career.
