“I’VE BEEN THROUGH HELL AND BACK, AND I’M STILL STANDING,” Tony Adams, Arsenal legend, declares as he opens up about his three decades of battling alcohol addiction. In a deeply personal and revealing interview, Adams took to social media to share his journey, offering rare insight into his past struggles. His message struck a chord, not only with fans but also with current stars battling their own demons. Adams pointed to the parallels between his own experience and those of today’s athletes, including Tiger Woods, subtly hinting at the pressures that continue to haunt the sports world. His candid post, filled with raw emotion, raised eyebrows and sparked intense conversation, as he alluded to the dark side of fame that many choose to ignore.

Inside a stylish townhouse in Marylebone, Tony Adams sits calmly at the head of a long wooden table. Dressed in a bold purple suit paired with a crisp white shirt, he appears composed, confident, and quietly content. There is a sense of peace about him—something earned rather than given.

Later this year, Adams will turn 60. But instead of planning a lavish celebration filled with former teammates, celebrity guests, and nostalgic speeches, he has chosen something far more meaningful. He intends to spend the evening with a small, carefully chosen group of around a dozen people—individuals who have played vital roles in helping him rebuild his life after years of alcoholism.Adams wonders whether his struggles with alcoholism in the 90s contributed to a title drought, with Arsenal winning the league again in 1998 after he had sobered up

Because for Adams, this year marks more than just a milestone birthday. August 16 will represent something even more profound: 30 years since he publicly acknowledged his battle with alcohol addiction, and three decades since he began the long, often painful journey toward recovery.

That turning point came after a particularly dark chapter in his life. Following England’s elimination from UEFA Euro 1996, Adams spiraled into a 44-day drinking binge that pushed him to the brink. It was a period he now describes with stark honesty, never sugarcoating the damage it caused.

“I’m proud I haven’t woken up in disgrace for 30 years,” he says bluntly, reframing the idea of success in deeply personal terms. For him, recovery is not about perfection—it is about survival, discipline, and self-awareness.

During his playing days, Adams was a commanding presence on the pitch. As captain of Arsenal under both George Graham and Arsène Wenger, and leader of the England national team under Terry Venables, he embodied strength and authority. Yet behind that image was a man struggling with deep internal turmoil.

To mark his 30-year milestone, Adams has released a new book titled 1996, written in collaboration with Ian Ridley. The book revisits the defining year of his life—not just as a footballer, but as a human being confronting his demons. It follows on from their earlier work, Addicted, which first exposed the hidden struggles behind Adams’ public persona.

Today, Adams remains closely involved in helping others through addiction. Through the Sporting Chance Clinic—an organization he founded using proceeds from his testimonial match—he works with athletes facing mental health challenges and substance dependency. His Six support network also provides ongoing care for individuals trying to rebuild their lives. He reveals in ‘1996’ that his son from his first marriage, Oliver, also developed an addiction to booze and is now also a recovering alcoholic

From his vantage point, Adams sees a shifting landscape in professional sport. While alcohol remains a problem, he believes newer forms of addiction are becoming increasingly prevalent. Prescription painkillers and gambling, he says, now dominate the struggles faced by many athletes.

He points to cases like Rex Chapman, who openly documented his addiction to opioids such as Vicodin and OxyContin, alongside a destructive gambling habit. Adams notes similar patterns emerging in the UK, particularly among rugby players and young footballers.

“Tramadol has become a serious issue,” he explains, referencing the powerful painkiller. “We’ve seen tragic consequences, including suicides. And the numbers keep rising.”

One figure Adams reflects on is Tiger Woods. When asked what he sees in the golf legend—whose career has been marred by injuries, surgeries, and high-profile car accidents—Adams does not hesitate.

“I see someone struggling with addiction,” he says candidly. He suggests that Woods’ reliance on medication to manage chronic pain may have contributed to a deeper dependency, something often overlooked due to his status as a global icon.

Adams believes that society sometimes enables such figures, shielding them from confronting their issues. He recalls how, during his own darkest days, he dismissed concerns from friends and teammates like Lee Dixon and Martin Keown, choosing denial over reflection.

“When people tried to tell me something was wrong, I just pushed them away,” he admits. “You don’t want to face yourself.”

He uses a simple metaphor to describe recovery: “Do you want to have a shower?”—meaning, are you ready to cleanse yourself of destructive habits and start again?

Modern challenges, however, make recovery even more complex. Adams is particularly critical of the normalization of gambling within football. He describes it as an “epidemic,” fueled by relentless advertising and sponsorship deals.Adams highlighted the obstacles current footballers face as they try to deal with addictions to painkillers and gambling, describing the latter as an epidemic within football and society

“Every few seconds, there’s another betting advert,” he says. “Even when they say ‘gamble responsibly,’ all an addict hears is ‘gamble.’”

He compares “free bets” to offering alcohol to a recovering alcoholic—an invitation that can easily trigger relapse. Unlike alcohol, he adds, gambling addiction is harder to detect. There are no physical signs, no breathalyzer equivalent, making it an invisible but dangerous problem.

Adams also reflects on the roots of his own addiction. In 1996, he explores how his upbringing shaped his emotional struggles. Raised in an environment where vulnerability was discouraged, he learned to suppress fear and anxiety rather than confront them.

As a child, he experienced panic attacks but felt unable to express his feelings. Football became both an escape and a mask, allowing him to channel his emotions without addressing them.

“Everything was bottled up,” he says. “And eventually, it came out in destructive ways.”

Recovery forced him to confront those suppressed emotions. The first six years were particularly difficult, marked by isolation and intense self-reflection. But over time, he began to accept himself fully—flaws and all.

One of the most emotional aspects of his journey involves his son, Oliver. Adams reveals that Oliver also struggled with alcohol addiction, creating a painful mirror of his own past.Adams said he sees 'an addict' when asked about Tiger Woods latest car accident

Watching his son self-destruct, he says, was even harder than experiencing addiction himself. “When it’s someone you love, it’s unbearable,” he explains.

Eventually, Oliver reached out for help. Adams guided him into recovery, introducing him to support groups and mentors. Today, Oliver has been sober for several years and has even started an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting on a beach in Portugal—a development Adams describes as “beautiful.”

Looking back on his football career, Adams wonders whether his addiction affected Arsenal’s performance during the 1990s. The team went several years without winning the league after their 1991 triumph, only reclaiming the title in 1998—after Adams had become sober.

“You’re only as sick as your secrets,” he reflects. Once he opened up to his teammates, many admitted they had noticed his struggles long before he acknowledged them himself.

His recovery also influenced those around him. Several teammates began addressing their own drinking habits, leading to a healthier team environment.

Now, as he approaches both his 60th birthday and his 30-year sobriety anniversary, Adams sees his story not as one of tragedy, but of transformation.

“This is about hope,” he says. “It’s about showing that life can be incredible when you’re free from addiction.”

He describes 1996 as the year he shed his old identity—the tough, aggressive captain hiding behind a mask—and began evolving into someone more introspective and self-aware.

With this latest book, Adams feels he has said everything he needs to say. He no longer seeks attention or validation, only peace.

“I’m ready to step back and enjoy life,” he says. “The people who need this story will find it.”

And for Adams, that is enough.

Tony Adams will be 60 later this year but says he has decided against a big party with former team-mates and older friends and family
