“The Worst News” – Liverpool Suffer Injury Blow as Joe Gomez Forced Off Early in Andoni Iraola’s First Match in Charge
Andoni Iraola’s first match as Liverpool manager ended with mixed emotions after his team began pre-season with an entertaining victory over Sunderland but suffered a major injury setback involving experienced defender Joe Gomez.
Liverpool started their preparations for the new campaign with a friendly against familiar Premier League opponents Sunderland during their tour of the United States. While the result provided encouragement for the new manager, the early departure of Gomez overshadowed much of the positive performance.
The Reds eventually secured a 4-2 victory, with goals from Kieran Morrison, Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa, and Lewis Koumas helping Iraola begin his tenure with a winning result.
However, the match quickly turned concerning when Gomez was forced to leave the field after only eight minutes.
The 29-year-old defender had started the game at centre-back and was given the responsibility of wearing the captain’s armband, making his early injury even more disappointing for both the player and the club.
Speaking after the match, Iraola admitted that Gomez’s injury was the biggest negative from an otherwise positive opening fixture.
“Probably the worst news has been straight away the injury of Joe,” the Liverpool manager said.
He explained that the squad had been progressing through pre-season training without any injury problems until Gomez’s setback occurred.
“We were happy because we were going through training without losing any players, and unfortunately we lost Joe straight away,” Iraola added.
The extent of Gomez’s injury was not immediately confirmed, but the situation raised concerns because the defender has experienced several fitness problems in recent seasons.
Last season, Gomez made 33 appearances under former Liverpool manager Arne Slot, although only 16 of those came as starts. His campaign was interrupted by a series of smaller physical issues, including hamstring problems, knee complaints, muscle injuries, and Achilles concerns.
The latest setback adds another challenge for a player who has worked hard to remain available and contribute to the team.
Liverpool entered the match already dealing with defensive absences. Club captain Virgil van Dijk was unavailable after representing the Netherlands at the World Cup and taking a holiday break, while new £60 million signing Jeremy Jacquet was also not included in the starting lineup.
Iraola explained that the club was taking a cautious approach with Jacquet, who had spent a significant period without competitive football before joining Liverpool.
“With Jeremy, we decided to take things slowly,” Iraola said.
“He has been out for many months without playing. He has been training very well, but we want to manage his return carefully.”
The Liverpool manager suggested that Jacquet would likely feature later during the United States tour, giving him enough time to build match fitness.
“He will probably play in the final game of this tour and will have enough time to get minutes,” Iraola explained.
Liverpool were also without highly rated teenager Giovanni Leoni, who continues his rehabilitation and individual training following a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The defensive situation highlighted concerns that Iraola had already raised before the friendly. Earlier in the week, the new manager admitted that his defensive options were limited, and the match against Sunderland appeared to underline those concerns.
Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, watching from the sidelines in Nashville, would have been aware of the importance of strengthening the defensive department before the new season begins.
After Gomez’s early exit, young defenders Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe were forced into increased responsibility. Despite their lack of experience at senior level, both players performed impressively under difficult circumstances and helped Liverpool maintain control of the match.
The defensive challenges come after Liverpool lost several experienced players during the summer transfer window.
Ibrahima Konate departed after joining Real Madrid as a free agent, while long-serving left-back Andy Robertson completed a move to Tottenham. Those departures have increased the pressure on Liverpool to strengthen their back line.
So far, Liverpool have added defensive reinforcements through the signings of Jeremy Jacquet and Víctor Muñoz, spending a combined £95 million on the two players.
The club remains active in the transfer market and is reportedly looking to bring in further attacking options as well.
One of Liverpool’s major targets is Paris Saint-Germain and France winger Bradley Barcola. The 23-year-old forward is reportedly entering the final two years of his contract and is not expected to sign a new agreement with the French champions.
PSG have reportedly placed a valuation of around £140 million on Barcola, but Liverpool remain confident they can compete for his signature despite interest from Arsenal.
In terms of defensive recruitment, Liverpool had previously attempted to reunite Iraola with former Bournemouth player Marcos Senesi. However, the Argentine defender ultimately chose to join Tottenham instead.
The search for additional defensive options is expected to continue as Liverpool prepare for the new season.
Despite the injury concern surrounding Gomez, there were several encouraging signs from the victory over Sunderland. The attacking players demonstrated creativity, with goals from multiple players showing the squad’s depth in the final third.
For Iraola, the result provided a positive start, but Gomez’s injury served as a reminder of the challenges ahead. Building a strong squad capable of competing across multiple competitions will be a key priority during the remaining weeks of the transfer window.
Liverpool’s opening competitive fixture will come away at Newcastle, while their first home match at Anfield will see them face Nottingham Forest.
Before then, Iraola and his coaching staff will hope that Gomez’s injury is not serious and that additional defensive reinforcements can arrive to provide greater stability.
The beginning of a new managerial era often brings excitement and optimism, but Liverpool’s first pre-season match demonstrated both sides of football. The team showed attacking quality and secured victory, yet one early injury created immediate concerns.
For Joe Gomez, the priority will be recovery and returning to full fitness. For Liverpool, the focus will be ensuring that defensive problems do not become a major obstacle as they enter another demanding Premier League campaign.
