Liverpool and Newcastle United are preparing to come together in an emotional tribute to the late Kevin Keegan, whose final wish was to return to St James’ Park and properly say goodbye to supporters. The football legend, who enjoyed extraordinary success with both clubs during his career, died last month at the age of 75 after battling stage four stomach cancer.

The tributes are set to take place as Newcastle host Liverpool in their opening Premier League match of the season at St James’ Park on Sunday, August 23. The occasion will carry special significance because Keegan played such an important role in the history of both clubs and remained deeply loved by supporters long after his playing and managerial days had ended.

Known affectionately throughout football as “King Kev,” Keegan built a remarkable career that made him one of the most recognisable figures in English football. His achievements as a player, manager and England international ensured that he became an icon of the sport.

Keegan enjoyed some of his greatest success during his years with Liverpool. After joining the club in 1971, he went on to make more than 300 appearances before leaving in 1977. During that period, he helped Liverpool win three First Division titles, as well as the European Cup and several other major honours.

His energy, attacking ability and determination made him a huge favourite with Liverpool supporters. Keegan became a central figure in a team that was beginning to establish itself as one of the dominant forces in English and European football.

After leaving Anfield, Keegan moved to Hamburg in Germany, where his reputation grew even further. His performances earned him two Ballon d’Or awards, confirming his status as one of the finest players in world football at the time.

He also represented England on 63 occasions and became an important figure for the national side during his international career.

Keegan later played for Southampton before joining Newcastle United, where he would develop another extraordinary connection with a set of supporters. His arrival on Tyneside helped transform the mood around the club, and he played a major role in helping Newcastle win promotion from the Second Division.

His relationship with Newcastle became even stronger after he moved into management. Keegan returned to the club as manager and once again helped guide Newcastle out of the second tier. He later turned them into serious Premier League title contenders, producing one of the most exciting teams of the 1990s.

His attacking style of football and passionate personality made him a hero to generations of Newcastle supporters. Away from Newcastle, his managerial career also included spells with Fulham, Manchester City and the England national team.

Earlier this year, however, Keegan’s family revealed that he had been diagnosed with cancer after being admitted to hospital because of continuing abdominal problems. He remained largely out of the public spotlight for several months before personally speaking about his condition in May.

During a public question-and-answer event at Newcastle’s Tyne Theatre and Opera House, Keegan revealed that he had stage four stomach cancer. He explained that the illness had been discovered unexpectedly after he was involved in a car accident.

The accident led doctors to carry out medical examinations and scans before an operation. It was during those checks that they discovered the cancer.

Keegan told the audience that doctors had introduced him to a specialist who was using a new approach to treating his condition. In an emotional detail, he explained that the doctor happened to be a Liverpool supporter.

Keegan jokingly connected that fact with Liverpool’s famous anthem, saying it reassured him that he would not be facing the difficult period alone.

Despite the seriousness of his diagnosis, Keegan remained determined to reconnect with the Newcastle supporters who had meant so much to him throughout his life.

During the same event, he shared one particularly emotional ambition. Keegan said he wanted to return to St James’ Park so he could speak directly to the fans and say goodbye.

He explained that when his final spell with Newcastle ended, he had not been given the opportunity to properly bid farewell to the supporters.

Sadly, Keegan died before he was able to fulfil that wish himself.

Now, Newcastle and Liverpool are planning to honour his memory at the stadium he had hoped to visit one final time. Their Premier League meeting provides an especially appropriate occasion because the fixture brings together the two clubs with which Keegan is most closely associated.

Liverpool confirmed that they had been communicating directly with Newcastle about organising appropriate tributes ahead of the match.

The club explained that the two sides were working together because Keegan had represented both teams with great distinction during his career.

Liverpool are also planning an additional tribute when they play their first Premier League home game of the season against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, August 29.

At Anfield, supporters will be given another opportunity to celebrate Keegan’s life and achievements. Plans include a special fan mosaic and a period of applause before the match begins.

Liverpool’s players are also expected to wear black armbands as a sign of respect.

The tributes will give fans who remember Keegan’s contribution to Liverpool an opportunity to honour one of the club’s most influential former players.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have also confirmed that they are working closely with Liverpool and several supporter organisations to ensure the occasion at St James’ Park reflects Keegan’s enormous importance to both clubs.

The Magpies pointed out the significance of opening the 2026/27 Premier League campaign against Liverpool, the club where Keegan made 323 appearances between 1971 and 1977.

Newcastle officials are consulting with fan groups including the club’s Fan Advisory Board, the Newcastle United Supporters Trust and Wor Flags. The Premier League is also involved in discussions about how the tributes should be organised.

The objective is to ensure that Keegan’s memory is celebrated in a way that reflects both his football achievements and the powerful relationship he developed with supporters.

For Newcastle fans, the occasion is likely to be particularly emotional because of Keegan’s final public wish. He had hoped to stand inside St James’ Park once again and personally thank the supporters who had welcomed him as both a player and manager.

Although he will not be able to make that farewell himself, the match against Liverpool will effectively give supporters the chance to say goodbye to him instead.

For Liverpool followers, the game will also provide an opportunity to remember the player who helped establish the club’s success during the 1970s before going on to become one of the greatest British footballers of his generation.

Keegan’s story connects Liverpool and Newcastle in a way few other players have managed. He won major trophies at Anfield, became a superstar in European football and later transformed Newcastle both on the pitch and from the dugout.

His death has therefore been felt far beyond one club or city.

The planned ceremonies at St James’ Park and Anfield will ensure his contribution to football is remembered by supporters from both sides.

Most poignantly, the tribute at Newcastle will help fulfil, in a different form, the final wish Keegan expressed before his death. He had wanted one more opportunity to return to St James’ Park and say farewell.

Instead, thousands of supporters will gather there to celebrate his life, remember his remarkable career and offer their own farewell to “King Kev.” Former England and Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan
