PRINCE WILLIAM’S THREE-WORD REQUEST BEFORE HIS ROYAL WEDDING LEFT HIS TRUSTED AIDE FEELING OVERWHELMED

As preparations intensified for the highly anticipated royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011, one trusted member of the royal household found himself carrying an enormous responsibility. A simple three-word instruction from the future king would leave him both honored and deeply anxious.

Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, a decorated former military officer who served as principal private secretary to both Prince William and Prince Harry, has reflected on his experiences working with the royal brothers, including his role in organizing one of the most watched weddings in modern history.

In a recent interview, Lowther-Pinkerton revealed that although the wedding eventually became a spectacular success, he initially felt considerable pressure after receiving a direct instruction from Prince William.

According to the longtime royal aide, William told him, “You’re running it.”

Those three words may have sounded straightforward, but for Lowther-Pinkerton they represented a tremendous level of trust and responsibility. The royal wedding, held in April 2011, attracted global attention, with millions of people tuning in to watch the ceremony between Prince William and Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey.

Reflecting on the experience years later, Lowther-Pinkerton admitted that the assignment was intimidating.

Although he had spent much of his career handling complex situations and high-pressure environments, overseeing a royal wedding of such scale was unlike anything he had previously encountered.

“The wedding was wonderful,” he recalled. “But I was terrified when William told me I was in charge.”

His military background, however, proved invaluable. Before entering royal service, Lowther-Pinkerton built an impressive career in the British Army, serving with the elite Special Air Service (SAS). His distinguished service earned him an MBE and established a reputation for leadership, discipline, and calm decision-making under pressure.

After leaving active military duty, he transitioned into royal service. He initially worked as an equerry to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother before later becoming principal private secretary to Princes William and Harry.

From 2005 to 2013, he played a central role in supporting the young princes as they navigated public duties, military careers, charitable projects, and major personal milestones.

His tenure coincided with some of the most important years in William’s life, including his relationship with Kate Middleton, their engagement, and ultimately their wedding.

Looking back, Lowther-Pinkerton compared the task of coordinating the royal wedding to commanding a large military operation.

He explained that the event involved a vast network of highly skilled professionals, ranging from security teams and event planners to ceremonial experts and government officials.

Rather than managing every detail personally, his role was to establish the overall framework and ensure that everyone could perform their jobs effectively.

“It was probably the closest experience I’ve ever had to commanding a division,” he said.

He emphasized that the success of the event relied on trusting talented people to do what they were trained to do. His responsibility was less about controlling every aspect and more about creating the conditions necessary for smooth execution.

Fortunately, the wedding unfolded without major issues and became one of the defining royal events of the twenty-first century.

More than a decade later, however, Lowther-Pinkerton found himself involved in a very different and far more personal moment with Catherine, now Princess of Wales.

During an official visit to Suffolk in September 2025, where he currently serves as Deputy Lieutenant, he experienced an awkward encounter that left him embarrassed but amused.

As the Princess of Wales approached him warmly, she reportedly leaned in for a friendly greeting. Unsure of the proper protocol, Lowther-Pinkerton instinctively bowed his head.

Unfortunately, the two movements happened simultaneously.

The result was a near collision.

Recalling the incident with humor, he admitted that he almost accidentally headbutted the princess.

“I was absolutely mortified,” he said. “I didn’t know whether I should bow or greet her normally.”

Despite the potentially uncomfortable situation, he praised Catherine for handling it with grace and kindness.

According to Lowther-Pinkerton, her relaxed reaction was characteristic of the person she has always been.

He described the Princess of Wales as someone who combines dignity with warmth, making those around her feel comfortable even in awkward circumstances.

“She’s incredible,” he said. “William chose well. I think they’re both wonderful.”

His admiration for the royal couple reflects the close working relationship he developed with them over many years.

As principal private secretary, Lowther-Pinkerton occupied a unique position within the royal household. He was responsible not only for managing schedules and official engagements but also for providing advice, support, and guidance during critical moments.

Working with both William and Harry required flexibility, he explained, because each prince had different needs and expectations.

At times, he needed to act as a firm protector, standing up for them or addressing difficult situations on their behalf. On other occasions, he served as a trusted advisor, helping them navigate challenges without escalating tensions.

He compared aspects of the role to military leadership, where maintaining authority often requires a balance between strength and diplomacy.

Sometimes, he explained, a situation called for firmness. Other times, a calm conversation was more effective.

The key was delivering difficult messages without creating unnecessary conflict.

Whether leading soldiers or advising members of the royal family, he observed, the fundamental leadership principles remained remarkably similar.

His dedication and professionalism earned the respect of both princes throughout his years of service.

Even Prince Harry, who later became one of the monarchy’s most outspoken critics, expressed admiration for Lowther-Pinkerton in his memoir, Spare.

Although Harry used large portions of the book to criticize aspects of royal life and institutional traditions, he made an exception when discussing the man affectionately known by the initials “JLP.”

Harry described him as someone whose polished appearance concealed a formidable personality shaped by elite military training.

According to the Duke of Sussex, Lowther-Pinkerton possessed a straightforward honesty that distinguished him from many others.

Harry praised his unwillingness to tolerate nonsense, noting that he neither engaged in dishonesty nor accepted it from those around him.

The prince suggested that JLP’s reputation extended far beyond the palace walls, with many people recognizing him as a person of integrity and strong principles.

Such praise from Harry highlights the significant impact Lowther-Pinkerton had on both brothers during a transformative period in their lives.

His years of service covered everything from military deployments and charitable initiatives to public scrutiny and historic royal occasions.

Among all those experiences, however, the 2011 wedding of William and Kate remains one of the most memorable.

What began with a simple instruction from the groom ultimately became one of the most successful and celebrated royal events in recent memory.

For Lowther-Pinkerton, those three words—“You’re running it”—represented both a daunting challenge and a remarkable vote of confidence from a prince he had served for years.
