A hiker has shared his unforgettable encounter with the Princess of Wales after unexpectedly meeting her on Ben Nevis while she was taking part in the demanding National Three Peaks Challenge.
Jacky Leung recalled being astonished when he realized that the woman hiking up Britain’s tallest mountain was none other than Princess Kate. During their brief exchange, he told her she was “so inspiring,” while the princess congratulated him on successfully reaching the summit.
According to Mr. Leung, the surprising meeting began when he noticed two camera operators making their way uphill. One of them paused to prepare filming equipment, apparently waiting to capture footage of what he initially believed was simply a particularly fit female hiker climbing the mountain.
Only moments later did he recognize that the hiker was the Princess of Wales. The realization left him completely stunned. He admitted that he was momentarily unable to find the right words and felt too shocked to greet her properly because he had never expected to encounter a senior member of the Royal Family in such a setting.
Describing the experience afterward, Mr. Leung said he felt both confused and excited at the same time. Before he had a chance to gather his thoughts, Princess Kate greeted him warmly and started a friendly conversation.
The princess smiled and asked, “Hi, are you alright?” Mr. Leung replied that he was doing well and explained that he was simply waiting for his friends to catch up. Kate then asked whether he had managed to reach the summit of Ben Nevis.
He proudly answered that his group had successfully completed the climb and that they had been fortunate with the conditions. In response, the princess congratulated him by saying, “Well done!”
Mr. Leung thanked her before expressing his admiration, telling Kate that she was “so inspiring.” She responded with a smile and thanked him in return before continuing her climb toward the peak.
Reflecting on the brief meeting, Mr. Leung said the princess moved uphill with remarkable energy and determination. He described her pace as a powerful uphill walk, adding that her positive attitude and physical endurance were immediately obvious.
Interestingly, he noted that very few other walkers on the mountain seemed to realize that the Princess of Wales was among them. Despite her high-profile status, Kate blended in with the other hikers as she continued making her way toward the summit.
Princess Kate was attempting one of Britain’s toughest endurance challenges by climbing the country’s three highest mountains within a single 24-hour period. Her route included Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England, and Snowdon in Wales, beginning on Saturday evening.
Mr. Leung later revealed that even his own friends completely missed seeing the princess pass by them during the climb. According to him, none of them recognized her until afterward.
He emphasized that completing the National Three Peaks Challenge is an extremely demanding physical achievement that requires stamina, determination, and mental resilience. Watching the princess undertake such a difficult expedition gave him even greater respect for her.
Calling the experience unforgettable, Mr. Leung described the day as extraordinary, saying that a series of unexpected coincidences had made it one of the most memorable hikes he had ever completed. He praised Princess Kate for displaying exceptional perseverance and endurance throughout the challenge, saying she had earned his deepest admiration.
The demanding expedition was undertaken to raise funds for a cancer charity while also highlighting the importance of life after a cancer diagnosis. Kensington Palace explained that the challenge was deeply personal to the princess, who wanted to support others facing similar experiences.
Unlike many public engagements, Kate completed the mountain challenge largely on her own, although specialist Mountain Rescue teams were available throughout the route to ensure her safety during the demanding journey across three countries.
After successfully completing the challenge, she was welcomed by members of her family waiting at the finish. Prince William was there to congratulate his wife, joined by their three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, were also present, along with her brother, James Middleton.
Kensington Palace said they believed Princess Kate had become the first member of the Royal Family to successfully complete the National Three Peaks Challenge, making the achievement a historic milestone for the monarchy.
The accomplishment was celebrated publicly by the Royal Family through its official social media channels. A congratulatory message was posted praising the Princess of Wales for completing the demanding expedition.
Kate later explained that the challenge represented far more than a physical test of endurance. She wanted to use the experience to give something meaningful back to others while raising awareness about the long-term effects of serious illnesses, particularly cancer.
In a video released after the challenge, the princess spoke about the people she had met whose lives had been affected by cancer. She described them as remarkable individuals whose courage had inspired her throughout her own journey.
Kate acknowledged that she personally understood the emotional and physical challenges involved in dealing with cancer, saying she knew firsthand how difficult recovery could be for both patients and their loved ones.
Speaking in footage recorded before beginning the expedition, the princess explained that many people had asked why she wanted to complete such a physically demanding challenge. She answered that the reasons were deeply personal.
Kate said she felt incredibly grateful simply to be healthy enough to climb the mountains. At the same time, she believed the challenge offered an opportunity to recognize and support the extraordinary work being carried out by healthcare professionals and charities across the country.
Alongside the video, the Princess of Wales shared a written message confirming that she had successfully completed the National Three Peaks Challenge.
Photographs released after the climb showed Kate smiling at the mist-covered summit of Ben Nevis. She was dressed in practical hiking equipment, including a waterproof jacket, a baseball cap beneath her raised hood, and trekking poles attached to her backpack.
Observers also noticed that she continued wearing her sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring, the iconic piece of jewelry that once belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales, during the demanding expedition.
In her written statement, Kate explained that the challenge had never been solely about testing her physical fitness. Instead, she viewed it as an opportunity to explore what life can look like after receiving a serious medical diagnosis while also supporting important charitable work.
She highlighted the importance of The Royal Marsden Hospital, describing it as a place with deep personal significance because of the life-changing care and expertise it provides to countless patients every year.
Through completing the challenge, the princess said she hoped to encourage greater understanding of the wider effects that major illnesses have on individuals and families. She also wanted to emphasize the importance of holistic healthcare, which supports not only physical recovery but emotional and psychological wellbeing.
Drawing on her own experience with cancer, Kate explained that the disease affects far more than the body alone. She said illness can influence every aspect of a person’s daily life, including emotional health, mental resilience, relationships, work, and personal identity.
The princess pointed out that every year, hundreds of thousands of people receive life-changing cancer diagnoses. From that moment onward, they begin a journey that challenges them physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
She noted that the consequences extend well beyond patients themselves, affecting family members, close friends, colleagues, and even the quiet moments people spend reflecting on their lives.
Kate concluded by emphasizing that cancer transforms how people think, feel, and experience the world around them. Speaking from personal experience, she said she fully understood the profound and lasting impact the disease can have on every dimension of life, reinforcing her commitment to supporting others through awareness, compassion, and charitable action.
