Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could soon find themselves living next door to one of Britain’s best-known interior designers, and their potential new neighbour has already offered a rather candid warning about life in the Cotswolds.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, the television personality and interior design expert, has spoken about the possibility of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex settling in the popular countryside region. The Cotswolds has become one of the most desirable destinations for wealthy and famous residents, with numerous celebrities choosing to own homes there.

Among those associated with the area are television presenter Jeremy Clarkson, music superstar Beyoncé and David and Victoria Beckham. The region is known for its picturesque villages, rolling countryside and traditional stone houses, while also offering celebrities a degree of privacy away from London.

Harry and Meghan’s possible move has therefore attracted considerable attention, particularly after the couple returned to the UK with their children.

The Sussexes Return to Britain

Harry, Meghan and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, arrived in Britain on Wednesday after flying from California.

The family reportedly travelled by private aircraft and landed at Birmingham Airport shortly before midday. Their arrival marked a major change for the Sussexes, who have spent the past six years living in the United States.

Harry and Meghan moved to the US after stepping back from their senior royal responsibilities in 2020. Since then, they have established a new life in California, where they have pursued charitable projects, business ventures and media opportunities.

Their return to Britain has now fuelled speculation about whether the family could spend considerably more time in the country.

One of the locations frequently mentioned in connection with their future plans is the Cotswolds.

If the Sussexes do decide to settle there, they could find themselves becoming neighbours of a number of famous faces, including Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

Two Very Different Sides of the Cotswolds

Laurence believes there is more than one type of lifestyle within the Cotswolds.

He described the area as having a more glamorous, celebrity-focused side and another part that is considerably more relaxed and traditional. Laurence lives with his family in the latter area and believes that the distinction is important when considering how Harry and Meghan might fit into the local community.

According to him, the part of the Cotswolds where he lives is not particularly impressed by fame or social status.

Instead, residents tend to value people who are genuine and comfortable being themselves. Laurence suggested that this attitude is actually one of the reasons some celebrities choose to live in his part of the region.

He explained that famous people who are able to behave naturally often appreciate the straightforward atmosphere and relative lack of fascination with celebrity culture.

For Harry and Meghan, this could present both an opportunity and a challenge.

Meghan May Face a Particular Test

Laurence suggested that Meghan, in particular, may need to adapt to the expectations of local residents if the family eventually moves into the area.

He believes that authenticity will be particularly important. In his view, people who live in the Cotswolds are highly perceptive and can quickly tell when someone is not behaving naturally.

He jokingly used strong language to describe the ability of local residents to detect what he sees as insincerity, saying that Cotswold people can easily recognise when someone is not being genuine.

His comments appear to suggest that Meghan may need to adopt a relatively down-to-earth approach to everyday life if she becomes a regular presence in the local community.

This could be particularly relevant if she takes on the role of a typical school-run parent.

With Archie and Lilibet expected to attend British schools, Harry and Meghan may soon become regular figures at school drop-off and pick-up.

Laurence suggested that this could be one of the most important ways for Meghan to establish a positive relationship with local parents.

Rather than relying on royal status or celebrity connections, she may need to approach other parents in a friendly and ordinary manner.

He warned that it would be unwise to alienate the other mothers at the school gates. His humorous comments highlighted the importance of fitting into the community rather than appearing overly formal or distant.

The Cotswolds may be home to numerous wealthy and famous residents, but that does not necessarily mean local communities are impressed by status.

In fact, Laurence believes that many people in his part of the region prefer a much simpler approach to social life.

Harry May Have an Advantage

Interestingly, Laurence believes Harry could potentially receive a warmer welcome than Meghan.

One reason is the Duke’s existing connection to the region and his links to his mother’s family. Harry has spent time in the Cotswolds and has connections to the wider area through the Spencer family.

His uncle, Charles Spencer, owns Althorp House, the historic family estate associated with Princess Diana. Harry has visited the estate and has maintained relationships with relatives on his mother’s side.

These connections could make Harry seem more familiar to local residents than Meghan, who does not have the same longstanding links to the British countryside.

Laurence therefore suggested that Harry may find it easier to settle into the community, while Meghan could face greater scrutiny as she establishes herself.

If Harry and Meghan eventually become Cotswolds residents, they would hardly be the first celebrities to choose the area.
