Josh Duhamel Reveals Wife Audra Mari Suffered ‘Really Hard’ Childbirth Battle After Severe Medical Complication

Actor Josh Duhamel has opened up about the dangerous medical complications he and his wife, Audra Mari, faced during the recent birth of their daughter Rocca, revealing that the 32-year-old former Miss World America suffered from a high-risk condition that put her at risk of severe hemorrhage. Speaking candidly during an appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark, the 53-year-old Transformers star detailed how Mari was diagnosed with placenta previa during her pregnancy—a precarious obstetric condition where the placenta covers the cervix, blocking the birth canal and presenting life-threatening bleeding risks during delivery.

The couple, who welcomed baby Rocca more than two months ago, had carefully planned a scheduled C-section to safely navigate the condition. However, Duhamel admitted that the nerve-wracking ordeal tested them emotionally, praising the advancements of healthcare for ensuring both mother and child pulled through safely.

“It was really hard on Audra, to be honest,” Duhamel revealed during the television interview. “She had this thing called placenta previa, which means the placenta was sitting between the baby and the cervix. That’s how women used to bleed out back in the day. Thankfully we have modern medicine and everything, so we knew it was there.”

Despite having a pre-planned surgical delivery arranged with their medical team, the couple’s timeline was suddenly thrown into chaos just days before the scheduled procedure. Duhamel recalled how Mari woke up convinced they needed to head to the hospital immediately after experiencing an unsettling dream in which her husband tapped her on the nose. Trusting her instincts, the couple abandoned their original schedule and scrambled to get to the delivery room.

The actor described a frantic race against the clock as he sped through local streets to reach the hospital in time to avoid dangerous birth complications.

“I won’t get into the gory details, but she said, ‘We got to go,’” the Safe Haven actor recalled. “So, we rushed into the car, raced through about five red lights, and then had the baby two hours later.”

Duhamel expressed immense gratitude to the medical team at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, North Dakota, praising the staff for instilling confidence in the couple during a terrifying situation and safely delivering their “beautiful baby girl” via an emergency operation.

Family Expansion and Sibling Dynamics at Home

The arrival of baby Rocca marks the second child for Duhamel and Mari, who also share two-year-old son Shepherd. Additionally, the actor is a father to 12-year-old son Axl from his previous marriage to pop star Fergie. Reflecting on how their household dynamic has shifted since bringing the newborn home, Duhamel shared a humorous look into how toddler Shepherd is adjusting to his new role as an older brother.

“He likes her kind of,” the actor quipped when asked about Shepherd’s reaction to his baby sister, “but he also accidentally kicks her in the head.”

While managing a growing household with three children spanning from infancy to early adolescence brings its own challenges, Duhamel remains dedicated to prioritizing his family life alongside his demanding Hollywood career.

Between filming commitments—including starring in Netflix’s hit series Ransom Canyon—Duhamel candidly admitted that juggling professional obligations with parental duties frequently leaves him battling work-related guilt when filming takes him away from home for extended periods.

“I work a lot, and I often have a lot of guilt about not being there as often as I could be,” Duhamel previously admitted during an interview. “So I try to maybe overcompensate or do things to be there often.”
