Jeff Bezos and Consortium Secure Minority Stake in Liverpool as £1.65 Billion Deal Confirmed
Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group have formally completed the sale of a minority stake in the club to a consortium of high-profile investors, in a deal valued at approximately £1.65 billion. The Boston-based group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox, has sold around one-third of the Premier League club in a transaction that brings significant new capital and fresh perspectives while leaving day-to-day control firmly in existing hands.
The consortium is headed by Amit Bhatia, the former Queens Park Rangers executive, who will take on the role of vice-chairman. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is involved indirectly through the group, although the world’s third-richest individual will not occupy a seat on the board. Other members include technology pioneer Bryan Baum and Elaine Saverin, wife of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. The arrangement was confirmed in an official club statement that underlined the shared long-term vision between the parties.

FSG Emphasises Continuity and Shared Philosophy
Mike Gordon, president of Fenway Sports Group, described the investment as consistent with the club’s established approach. “Liverpool has always been built by thinking beyond one season and making decisions with the club’s long-term interests in mind,” Gordon said. “That approach continues to attract interest from respected investors and business leaders around the world. As we considered this opportunity, it became clear that Amit and the consortium shared our long-term philosophy and appreciation for what makes Liverpool special. Their experience and perspective will complement the strong foundation already in place, and we look forward to working together.”
Sources close to the negotiations indicate that the sale will not alter the daily operations of the club. Fenway Sports Group retains majority ownership and the authority to make final decisions. Bhatia’s vehicle, 1892 Holdings, will be consulted on major strategic matters, and the working relationship is expected to develop flexibly over time. Discussions between the parties had been ongoing for a considerable period before the agreement was finalised.

Bhatia Highlights Global Reach and Respect for Existing Ownership
Bhatia presented the consortium as a carefully balanced group combining experience, relationships and international reach, particularly into India and Asia. He expressed pride at joining the ownership structure alongside Fenway Sports Group. “We are incredibly proud to be investing in Liverpool Football Club and to be doing so alongside FSG,” Bhatia said. “We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield. To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege. We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club’s continued success for years to come.”
The injection of capital arrives at a time when elite clubs continue to seek partners who can support sustained competitiveness both on and off the pitch. For Liverpool, the arrival of investors with extensive networks is viewed as an opportunity to broaden commercial horizons without disrupting the operational model that has delivered domestic and European success in recent years.

Profiles of the Key Figures Behind the Investment
Jeff Bezos, aged 62, remains one of the most recognisable figures in global business. According to Forbes he ranks as the third-richest person in the world. In 1994, after noting that internet usage was expanding at more than 2,300 per cent annually, he established an online bookstore in a Seattle garage with his then-wife Mackenzie Scott. The venture, originally called Cadabra, was renamed Amazon after the South American river so that it would appear near the top of alphabetised website listings. The company expanded far beyond books to become one of the world’s most prominent retail and technology platforms. Bezos stepped down as chief executive but continues as executive chairman. He also owns the Washington Post and founded the space exploration company Blue Origin, which competes with Elon Musk’s ventures. Bezos himself travelled to space in 2021. He has previously shown interest in sports ownership, exploring potential involvement with the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders before withdrawing. He married former journalist Lauren Sanchez last year.

Eduardo Saverin, whose wife Elaine forms part of the consortium, was born in Brazil to a family of Romanian heritage. He moved to Miami at the age of 13 and later attended Harvard University, where he became friends with Mark Zuckerberg. The pair each invested $1,000 to create a student communication platform initially known as The Facebook. The site expanded rapidly across universities and eventually to anyone aged 13 or older worldwide. It now counts more than three billion users, and its parent company Meta Platforms carries a market valuation of around £1.12 trillion. Saverin was portrayed by Andrew Garfield in the film The Social Network. Shortly before Facebook’s public listing he relocated to Singapore and renounced his United States citizenship. Now 44, he leads the venture capital firm B Capital.
Amit Bhatia, 46, is a British-Indian businessman with a background in investment banking spanning technology, media, property, real estate and health. After working on Wall Street he founded a construction company at the age of 32 that now employs more than 5,000 people in the United Kingdom. He received the young entrepreneur of the year award in 2013. In 2004 he married Vanisha Mittal in a six-day ceremony that entered the Guinness World Records as the most expensive wedding of its time, costing £41 million. Vanisha’s father is Lakshmi Mittal, ranked by Forbes as the world’s 65th-richest person with a fortune of £24.8 billion. Bhatia spent 19 years associated with Queens Park Rangers. Through his firm AyBe Capital he holds interests in the cricket franchise London Spirit, the YouTube channel of former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen, and an indoor golf league established by Rory McIlroy. He has played golf with basketball star LeBron James and is regularly seen on the course with Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.

The consortium’s combination of technology, media, construction and international networks is expected to open new commercial avenues for Liverpool while Fenway Sports Group continues to steer the club’s overall direction. With Bhatia installed as vice-chairman and the other investors providing additional expertise, the ownership structure now blends established American sports management experience with fresh global connections. The £1.65 billion valuation of the minority stake underlines the financial scale of modern Premier League ownership and the continuing appeal of one of English football’s most storied institutions to investors of the highest profile.
