“People couldn’t believe what they were hearing.” — Tony Romo is facing a fresh wave of rumors and criticism after an on-air Patrick Mahomes mix-up during his Bills–Broncos analysis, a cringe-worthy moment that fans say exposed deeper issues with his commentary as whispers grow that pressure is mounting behind the scenes at CBS

Tony Romo makes excruciating Patrick Mahomes error during heavily-criticized analysis of Bills-Broncos

Tony Romo suffered a humiliating on-air blunder as the criticism of the analyst continued to pile on during the latest round of the NFL playoffs.

Less than a week after coming under fire for his erratic calls during the Bills’ Wild Card game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the former quarterback was back on the call for Buffalo’s Divisional round clash.

The former Dallas Cowboys star returned to the booth as the Bills were shockingly eliminated from the postseason in a dramatic overtime matchup against the Denver Broncos on Saturday evening.

And while Buffalo were left facing the ire of Bills Mafia, Romo was suffering criticism of his own following his latest on-air performance.

Fans slammed Romo on social media after he made an inexcusable mistake during the second quarter of the clash.

The Bills had the ball on a 2nd-and-5 just one minutes into the second quarter as Allen scrambled for a gain of 26 yards.

The analyst referred to Bills quarterback Josh Allen (L) as Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes (R)

However, according to Romo, it was Patrick Mahomes who made the run as he accidentally referred to Allen with the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s name.

Romo is a renowned fan of Mahomes but Saturday’s on-air gaffe was inexcusable. The Chiefs failed to make the postseason for the first time since 2014, finishing their nightmare season with a record of 6-11.

To make matters worse, Mahomes suffered a devastating double-ligament tear in Kansas City’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14, which sealed the Chiefs’ fate and ended his season.

Romo’s error left fans stunned with many ripping into his performance online asn one questioned if he was ‘still sick.’

‘Seriously, is Romo ok?’ one user asked. ‘He sounds off compared to past telecasts. Almost zero enthusiasm. Not saying he should be Gus Johnson every call but when Nantz is lapping him in the excitement department, you know there’s an issue somewhere.’

‘He has fallen off so much,He was actually decent his 1st few years. He is flat-out horrible now,’ chimed in another.

Meanwhile, some outrageously suggested that Romo’s mistake was the result of  Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) – the progressive brain disease linked to a number of former football players.

Romo faced further widespread criticism, led by Dave Portnoy, throughout his performance in the booth.

Six days after outrageously alleging that he was ‘on drugs’ while calling the Bills’ Wild Card win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Portnoy led the criticism of Romo on social media once again as Buffalo locked horns with Denver in the Divisional round.

The Barstool Sports founder called him out for a mishap on commentary for CBS during Saturday’s game, after Romo said that quarterback Josh Allen had secured a first down for his team when the ruling on the field was actually a 4th-and-1.

‘Romo and [Jim] Nantz were so confusing during that segment they confused me,’ Portnoy wrote on X. ‘It was 4th and 1 and then they went for it on sneak. Had nothing to do with a fumble. Then Romo made it sound like the 1st down carry to [James] Cook was risky. They were totally lost’.

He then shared footage of the commentary gaffe and added in a separate post: ‘I hate to keep piling on Romo but this was 2 minutes of the most confusing worst announcing in the history of football. Arent there spotters in the booth to tell them what is going on?’

Romo has gained notoriety throughout the season for some strange calls in his position as an analyst for CBS, but the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback seems to have saved his weirdest for the postseason.

In the first quarter of last week’s Bills-Jaguars game, when Buffalo blocked a punt he appeared to let out a weird groan that evolved into an awkwardly long chuckle as he watched the replay.

Then, with 2:40 left on the clock in the first quarter, Romo let out a cringey maniacal laugh when the Jags managed to clinch a crucial first down.

Earlier this week, Romo addressed the criticism and revealed illness struck the CBS crew during their trip to Jacksonville.

‘We had a bunch of guys sick but we were just grinding through it… you’re not going to miss a playoff game – it’s too much fun,’ he told SiriusXM.

Romo then suggested he is not fazed by the criticism, insisting it comes with the territory of working on big-game broadcasts.

‘I think anytime you’re in a position we are – we’re on the air for three, three-and-a-half hours – you’re always trying to do the best you can and there’s always going to be moments where there is great stuff and then other stuff,’ he said.

‘It’s just part of being in your position – you just go back to work and do a great job. That’s the fun part about this, it’s sports and it makes it fun.

‘We’re just trying to make everyone enjoy the show and learn a little bit and have a great time. So to me it’s what makes sports amazing – it’s fun!’

According to a recent report from Front Office Sports, CBS bosses are not only standing by Romo, they also consider the backlash against him part of ‘a slanted media narrative’ that they are ‘seething’ at.

The report says that Romo has heard nothing from CBS bosses in New York about the level of his work, nor from CBS president David Berson.

An unnamed source was also quoted as saying the criticism against him was ‘much ado about nothing’.
