RAHEEM STERLING’S LEGAL NIGHTMARE DEEPENS: The former England star is facing the possibility of up to two years in prison after being charged over a Lamborghini crash and alleged possession of nitrous oxide. The £270,000 supercar was involved in a dramatic incident on the M3, but the details surrounding the police stop and what happened moments before the crash have raised even more questions.

Raheem Sterling Charged with Dangerous Driving and Possessing Laughing Gas After Lamborghini Crash

Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide after crashing his £270,000 Lamborghini on a motorway earlier this year, it has been confirmed. The former England and Premier League winger, 31, also faces a charge of failing to provide a specimen and could be jailed for up to two years if convicted on the most serious count. He is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on 15 September.

Hampshire Police were called to the M3 near the Minley Interchange on the morning of 28 May following reports of a Lamborghini swerving erratically across the carriageways shortly before 9am. Dashcam footage later obtained by the Daily Mail appeared to show the black luxury vehicle drifting across all three lanes while other motorists took evasive action. At one point the driver seemed to be inhaling from a balloon, the method commonly used to consume nitrous oxide, widely known as laughing gas or “hippy crack.”

Minutes later the car allegedly struck the motorway barriers. Sterling was arrested at the scene. Officers said he refused to provide a sample after his arrest, resulting in the additional charge. A spokesman for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed: “Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged for the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen. The charges come following a single-vehicle collision, involving a Lamborghini, on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange, on 28 May, 2026.”

Witness Describes Alarming Driving

A driving instructor who captured the incident on dashcam described a sequence of sudden and dangerous manoeuvres. “I was in the middle lane and without warning a black Lamborghini pulled in front of me, forcing me to slow,” he told the Mail. “I dropped back. I’m a driving instructor after all. The car turned back into the inside lane but the driver put his foot down and veered right across all three lanes and seemed to just avoid hitting the central reservation. It’s a powerful car and he could have easily gone through the central reservation if he’d hit the accelerator. A van driver behind him was forced to brake and he then shot off again and turned back across three lanes again into the inside lane.”

Footage obtained by the Daily Mail showed Starling's black Lamborghini M-way scraping the motorway central reservation, minutes before it crashed

The motorist said the footage was recorded at approximately 8.45am near Junction 4a southbound. He only realised the driver was Sterling after news of the arrest emerged. “I like Raheem but as a driving instructor I’m very concerned. He could have easily caused himself – and others – a great deal of harm. He was very fortunate that he did not do so.”

Career in Decline

The charges represent a further low point in a career that has unravelled significantly since Sterling left Manchester City for Chelsea in a £50million deal in 2022. Once one of the Premier League’s most dynamic attackers and an England regular with 82 caps, he found himself marginalised at Stamford Bridge, spent time on loan at Arsenal without rediscovering his best form, and eventually departed Chelsea in January after being frozen out of the squad. He had not played senior football since May 2024 before a short-lived move to Dutch side Feyenoord in February. That spell yielded only eight appearances and no goals before ending in the summer, leaving him without a club.

A source close to the player described the personal toll of the past two years. “The psychological strain that has been put on him is immeasurable. Isolated. The second he touches a ball, being told he’s a flop and he’s finished. Mocked. Heckled. He moved to the Netherlands to escape and rediscover his love for the game but the negativity followed. It’s been an extremely tough couple of years for him and this incident encompasses that.” Sterling’s representatives declined to comment when approached after the crash.

From Anfield Prospect to England Star

Sterling’s rise had once seemed unstoppable. After beginning at QPR he broke through at Liverpool as a teenager, earning a big-money move to Manchester City in 2015. At the Etihad he collected ten major trophies, including four Premier League titles, and became a mainstay of the England side. His last international appearance came in the 2-1 quarter-final defeat by France at the 2022 World Cup. The subsequent years at Chelsea, however, were marked by diminishing returns, questions over his finishing and decision-making, and an increasingly peripheral role.

The contrast between the player who once terrorised defences and the man now facing court proceedings over a motorway crash could scarcely be starker. Nitrous oxide, while previously legal for certain uses, has been subject to tightening restrictions because of its misuse as a recreational drug, and possession for wrongful inhalation is a criminal offence.

Court Date Set

Sterling will answer the three charges at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court in mid-September. Dangerous driving carries a maximum sentence of two years’ imprisonment, though the eventual outcome will depend on the evidence presented and any mitigation offered. The single-vehicle nature of the collision, the alleged presence of nitrous oxide, and the refusal to provide a specimen will all form part of the case prosecutors must prove.

For now the former England winger remains without a club and facing the most serious off-field trouble of his career. The footage of a high-performance Lamborghini weaving across a busy motorway, combined with the formal charges that have followed, has turned a concerning incident into a criminal matter that will be resolved in court. Whether the episode marks a final nadir or the beginning of some form of personal reckoning is a question only Sterling can answer in the months ahead. Public attention, meanwhile, will remain fixed on the September hearing and on how one of English football’s most recognisable names responds to the allegations against him.
