King Charles Was Reportedly “Seismic With Rage” Over Beckhams’ Buckingham Palace Celebration
King Charles was reportedly left extremely angry after David and Victoria Beckham accepted an invitation for their daughter Harper’s sixth birthday celebration at Buckingham Palace. The event, which took place in 2017, later became the center of a controversy over royal protocol, palace access and the use of a royal residence for a private family occasion.
According to Alison Boshoff’s book Brand Beckham, the celebration was arranged after the Beckhams were invited by Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who was then Prince Andrew. The invitation was reportedly connected to his private apartment at Buckingham Palace and was apparently suggested by his former wife, Sarah Ferguson.
The event was intended to give Harper Beckham a memorable birthday experience. On July 3, 2017, David Beckham shared several photographs from the occasion on social media, celebrating his daughter and describing her as a source of great happiness for the family.
The photographs showed Harper enjoying her sixth birthday at Buckingham Palace with several of her friends. Some of the children were dressed as princesses, with a number of them wearing crowns as they enjoyed the special occasion.
One photograph showed the children outside in the palace’s front quadrangle, while another featured Princess Eugenie spending time with the young guests inside. The images quickly attracted considerable attention because of the unusual setting.
Victoria Beckham was reportedly away on fashion-related business when the celebration took place. Nevertheless, she also joined in the birthday celebrations online by sharing an image of Harper wearing a costume inspired by Princess Elsa from Disney’s Frozen.
The fashion designer accompanied the picture with a short birthday message expressing affection for her daughter and referring to Harper as their “little birthday princess.”
Although the Beckham family appeared to regard the occasion as a special and memorable family experience, the decision to share photographs from Buckingham Palace reportedly caused controversy among royal commentators.
Dickie Arbiter, who previously served as press secretary to Queen Elizabeth II, was particularly critical of the Beckhams’ presence at the palace. He questioned why a private birthday event had been allowed to take place at such an important royal location.
Arbiter reportedly argued that the Beckhams should not have been permitted to use the palace in this way and raised concerns that Buckingham Palace risked being treated more like a tourist attraction or entertainment venue.
He also questioned whether allowing private celebrations inside the royal residence could diminish the significance and dignity associated with the building. His criticism focused particularly on the question of whether the Beckhams had received special treatment.
The timing of the party made the controversy even more sensitive. The celebration took place shortly after the Grenfell Tower disaster, which had caused widespread grief and anger across Britain. Critics therefore questioned whether it was appropriate for Buckingham Palace to be used as the setting for a private birthday gathering during such a difficult period.
However, Brand Beckham reportedly provides a different explanation of how the event came about. According to the book, David and Victoria did not independently request access to Buckingham Palace or arrange for the royal residence to be opened specifically for Harper’s birthday.
Instead, the celebration was reportedly hosted by Andrew in his private apartment at the palace. The invitation was said to have been connected to Sarah Ferguson, who had a longstanding friendship with Victoria Beckham.
Ferguson and Victoria had reportedly known one another for many years. Their relationship began around the period when Victoria was still famous as a member of the Spice Girls. The two women also shared several connections within celebrity and social circles, including a friendship with singer Sir Elton John.
Their social relationship reportedly included attending events such as Elton John’s famous White Tie and Tiara parties. This connection may have helped explain why the Beckhams were invited to the private celebration.
Nevertheless, according to reports cited by the book’s author, the greatest concern within royal circles was not necessarily the private gathering itself but the decision to photograph the event and publish the images online.
A palace insider reportedly described the social media posts as a significant violation of royal protocol. According to the source, senior members of the Royal Family were deeply unhappy about the photographs being made public.
The source claimed that Charles was particularly furious and suggested that the incident could worsen the already difficult relationship between him and his younger brother Andrew.
There were also reportedly concerns about photographs being taken in the Buckingham Palace quadrangle. The insider claimed that photography was not permitted in that particular area, adding to the sense that established rules had been ignored.
Prince William was also reportedly expected to be unhappy about the situation. The incident therefore appeared to create tension not only around the Beckhams but also within the Royal Family itself.
There was reportedly a perception that Sarah Ferguson had been able to arrange the invitation partly because Queen Elizabeth II was spending the summer in Scotland. This may have meant that the event attracted less immediate oversight from the monarch.
The controversy prompted David Beckham to offer clarification the following day. He appeared keen to correct the impression that Buckingham Palace had been opened specifically for his daughter’s birthday.
David explained that the occasion was not a special opening of the palace for Harper. Instead, he described it as a private tea party to which he, his family and several other guests had been invited.
He emphasized that the experience had been a privilege for the family and described the gathering as a beautiful opportunity to celebrate Harper with relatives and some of her school friends.
Despite the controversy surrounding the 2017 birthday party, the Beckhams’ relationship with the Royal Family later appeared to take a remarkably positive turn.
Years after the incident, David Beckham was formally recognized by King Charles for his contributions to sport and charitable work. In November 2025, the former England football captain received a knighthood at Windsor Castle.
David attended the ceremony with Victoria and his parents, Ted and Sandra Beckham. The family appeared proud and happy as they gathered together at the historic royal residence.
The honour represented a striking contrast with the controversy that had surrounded the Beckham family’s earlier visit to Buckingham Palace.
What had once been portrayed as a breach of royal protocol ultimately became part of a much broader relationship between the Beckhams and the British establishment. David’s later recognition by the King demonstrated how dramatically circumstances and relationships can change over time.
The 2017 incident also illustrates the sensitivity surrounding royal residences and the strict expectations placed on guests who are granted access to them. While Harper’s birthday was intended as a private and memorable celebration, the publication of photographs transformed the occasion into a public controversy.
For the Beckhams, the episode eventually became only one moment in their long relationship with the British Royal Family. David’s later knighthood marked a very different chapter, highlighting the contrast between the criticism he faced over the palace photographs and the formal recognition he ultimately received from King Charles.
The story therefore reflects both the importance of royal protocol and the changing nature of relationships between prominent public figures and the monarchy. What began as a six-year-old girl’s special birthday celebration at a royal residence eventually became a controversial episode that reportedly angered senior royals, yet years later the Beckham family found itself being welcomed and honoured at another of Britain’s most important royal locations.
