A royal expert has offered his perspective on how Prince William and Kate Middleton may be responding to the unexpected news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to spend an extended period in the United Kingdom.
Christopher Andersen, author of Brothers and Wives, believes the announcement is likely to create considerable anxiety for William and Kate, who have remained estranged from the Sussexes for years. Speaking about the reported move, Andersen suggested that the couple may be thinking, in effect, that the family drama is beginning all over again.
According to the royal author, William and Kate already have enormous responsibilities as they prepare for the future of the monarchy. Their focus is reportedly on strengthening the institution and ensuring that it remains relevant for future generations. The possibility of Harry and Meghan returning to Britain could therefore create an additional complication that they may not particularly welcome.
Andersen argued that the Sussexes’ physical return to Britain would almost inevitably attract enormous media attention. Harry and Meghan remain highly newsworthy figures, and their presence in the country could dominate headlines, potentially overshadowing other members of the Royal Family. In his view, that would be especially problematic for senior royals who prefer to maintain control over the public narrative surrounding the monarchy.
The royal expert suggested that King Charles and Queen Camilla, as well as William, could be uncomfortable if the Sussexes’ return became the primary focus of British royal coverage. Harry and Meghan have previously generated intense media interest through interviews, documentaries and public statements, and their return could once again place their relationship with the Royal Family at the center of public discussion.
Reports recently emerged that Harry and Meghan intend to relocate to Britain later this month after spending approximately six years living in Montecito, California. The couple reportedly plan to remain in the U.K. for an extended period, with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, expected to attend a British school beginning in September.
Although the family is apparently preparing to spend significantly more time in Britain, the Sussexes are not expected to give up their California lifestyle completely. They are reportedly keeping their Montecito property, while also maintaining other international residences. This arrangement would allow them to move between countries rather than completely abandoning their life in the United States.
Nevertheless, the reported school plans could indicate that Britain will become the family’s main base for at least part of the year. Andersen highlighted privacy and security as two of the biggest challenges Harry and Meghan could face if Archie and Lilibet are educated in Britain.
The couple have historically been extremely protective of their children’s privacy. Unlike Prince William and Kate’s children, whose photographs have regularly been released on official occasions and publicized since childhood, Archie and Lilibet have largely been kept away from the public spotlight.
The royal commentator therefore questioned how Harry and Meghan would protect their children from photographers and intrusive media if the family were living in Britain full-time. He suggested that managing paparazzi attention around school, daily activities and family outings could become particularly difficult.
The issue is even more complicated because Meghan has previously spoken about the difficulties she experienced while living in Britain. Andersen suggested that she struggled with aspects of British culture and the intense attention of the British tabloid press during her time as a working royal.
For that reason, he questioned whether Harry and Meghan would genuinely be prepared to give up the privacy and lifestyle they have established in California. Since moving to Montecito, the couple have repeatedly emphasized their appreciation for their life away from the formal pressures of royal life.
Security could present another significant concern. Harry has spent years fighting for greater security arrangements for himself and his family when they visit Britain. After stepping down as a senior working royal, he lost automatic access to the same level of publicly funded protection that he previously received.
Andersen noted that unless King Charles decides to personally provide royal protection for Harry and his family, the Sussexes may have to rely on privately funded security. Such protection could reportedly become extremely expensive if they were living in Britain for a prolonged period.
The security question also raises a broader issue about the Sussexes’ decision to return. If Harry has no intention of resuming official royal duties, Andersen questioned why the family would choose to establish a significant presence in Britain at this particular moment.
Harry and Meghan announced in January 2020 that they were stepping away from their responsibilities as working royals. Since then, they have built an independent life in the United States and have repeatedly emphasized their desire to remain financially and professionally independent from the Royal Family.
Andersen nevertheless speculated that their return could potentially be connected to the possibility of becoming involved with royal life again in some form. He suggested that living close to the Royal Family and receiving constant attention from the British media might place indirect pressure on the monarchy to reconsider Harry’s position.
The author theorized that the Sussexes could, intentionally or otherwise, be creating circumstances in which King Charles might eventually feel compelled to find some way of bringing Harry closer to the royal institution.
However, such a development would not necessarily receive the support of Prince William. Andersen emphasized that the relationship between the brothers has reportedly remained strained, with unresolved resentment still existing between them.
Despite some recent signs of improved communication between Harry and his father, the broader family relationship has not been completely repaired. The Sussexes’ return to Britain could therefore create opportunities for reconciliation while simultaneously reopening old disagreements.
Harry’s decision to spend more time in Britain is particularly notable because it represents a significant change from his previous comments about bringing his family back to the country.
During an interview with the BBC in May 2025, Harry expressed serious concerns about his family’s safety in Britain following his unsuccessful legal challenge over security arrangements. At that time, he said he could not imagine bringing Meghan and their children back to the U.K.
Since then, however, circumstances appear to have changed. Harry reportedly repaired some of his relationship with King Charles during a visit to Britain in September 2025. More recently, Harry, Meghan and their children met Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire.
That July visit was particularly significant because Charles reportedly saw Archie and Lilibet in person for the first time in several years. The reunion suggested that relations between Harry and his father may have improved enough to allow more direct family contact.
Despite these developments, Andersen believes William and the wider Palace establishment may still be uncertain about what Harry and Meghan’s return will mean.
The announcement reportedly caught senior members of the Royal Family off guard, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already complicated relationship. According to Andersen, Palace officials may now be trying to understand precisely why the Sussexes have decided to return and what their long-term intentions are.
Ultimately, Harry and Meghan’s move could have very different consequences. It could provide an opportunity for the Sussexes to rebuild relationships with the Royal Family and allow Archie and Lilibet to develop stronger connections with their British relatives. At the same time, their presence could reignite old tensions and attract relentless media attention.
For William and Kate in particular, the return may represent both a potential family reunion and a new challenge. While improved relations could eventually benefit the monarchy, unresolved disagreements between the brothers mean that a complete reconciliation cannot be assumed.
The Sussexes have not indicated that they intend to resume their former roles as working royals. For now, their reported move appears primarily focused on family, education and spending more time in Britain. Nevertheless, given Harry and Meghan’s complicated history with the Royal Family, their return is almost certain to generate considerable public interest and speculation about what might happen next.
