Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly preparing to return to Britain later this month, marking a dramatic development six years after the couple stepped away from royal duties and relocated to the United States.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to spend an extended period in the United Kingdom, with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, reportedly due to attend a British school from September. However, it remains unclear whether the family’s return will become permanent or simply represent a temporary arrangement.
According to reports, Harry and Meghan will live in a private, non-royal residence rather than returning to a royal property. Their decision is also not believed to signal a return to official royal duties. The couple are expected to continue their lives as private members of the Royal Family, consistent with the arrangements established after they stepped down as working royals in 2020.
The news is said to have surprised senior members of the Royal Family. King Charles reportedly learned only recently that his younger son intended to return to Britain later this month. Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, are also understood to have been informed of the plans.
Although the King is reportedly pleased at the prospect of having more opportunities to see his son and grandchildren, his position on Harry and Meghan’s official status is said to remain unchanged. Charles is understood to welcome the possibility of spending time with them privately, while maintaining that there will be no change to their roles as non-working members of the Royal Family.
Sources reportedly insist that Harry and Meghan have no intention of rejoining the institution as working royals. Their return is therefore being presented as a personal and family decision rather than a step toward restoring their former positions.
Interestingly, the possibility of moving back to Britain was apparently not discussed when Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet met King Charles at Highgrove earlier this summer. The family’s plans therefore appear to have developed more recently.
Harry was already scheduled to travel to Britain next month to attend the WellChild Awards. He had previously been expected to stay at Buckingham Palace during that visit. With the entire Sussex family now reportedly planning to spend a longer period in Britain, however, the Duke will apparently no longer need separate accommodation for the trip.
Their children are expected to begin attending a British school in September. Archie, who is seven, and five-year-old Lilibet have spent most of their lives in the United States, so the move could represent a major change for the young family. Nevertheless, there has been no confirmation that their education in Britain will continue indefinitely.
For privacy and security reasons, the location of Harry and Meghan’s new British home has not been disclosed. The couple are also expected to retain their substantial property in Montecito, California, where they have lived since moving to the United States. In addition, they continue to own a residence in Portugal, giving the family homes in several countries.
The reported return comes against the backdrop of the dramatic events that led Harry and Meghan to leave Britain in the first place. The couple married in 2018 and quickly became two of the most prominent members of the younger generation of the Royal Family. However, in early 2020, they announced their intention to step back from official royal responsibilities.
Their decision caused considerable controversy because it was reportedly made without prior consultation with senior members of the Royal Family, including Charles, Camilla and Prince William. The announcement shocked many observers and generated intense media attention.
Following a period of review, the late Queen Elizabeth II confirmed that Harry and Meghan would no longer undertake the responsibilities and duties associated with being working members of the Royal Family. She also made clear that the couple would not adopt a system in which they performed some royal duties while simultaneously remaining independent from the institution.
Harry subsequently lost his honorary military appointments, while the couple established a new life in North America. They eventually moved permanently to California in March 2020, where they began pursuing a combination of commercial, charitable and media projects.
Their relationship with the Royal Family has remained complicated since then. Interviews, documentaries and Harry’s memoir generated further public discussion about tensions within the family and the circumstances surrounding their departure from royal life.
There have also been longstanding allegations concerning Meghan’s relationship with members of royal household staff during her time in Britain. Some former employees reportedly described experiencing difficulties while working for the Sussexes, with claims that Meghan had acquired the unofficial nickname “Duchess Difficult.”
Journalist and royal correspondent Valentine Low previously reported allegations that some members of staff had been left emotionally distressed by their experiences. He later claimed that certain former employees remained deeply concerned about the possibility of repercussions even after leaving royal employment.
Meghan has strongly rejected allegations that she bullied staff and has characterized such reports as part of an organized campaign designed to damage her reputation. The claims remain disputed, and they have been an enduring source of controversy surrounding her time as a working royal.
Against this complicated history, the Sussexes’ reported decision to spend an extended period in Britain is particularly significant. It could provide Harry with greater access to his father and allow Archie and Lilibet to spend more time with their British relatives.
At the same time, the arrangement appears designed to preserve the boundaries established since the couple left royal duties. Harry and Meghan would be returning as private individuals rather than working royals, while retaining their independence and their homes overseas.
For the moment, the biggest unanswered question is whether the move represents a temporary family arrangement or the beginning of a longer-term change in the Sussexes’ relationship with Britain. Their decision to enroll their children in a British school suggests that the family may be preparing for a substantial period in the country, although there is no clear indication that they intend to abandon their life in California.
If the reported plans go ahead, Harry and Meghan’s return would undoubtedly attract significant public attention. After years of living thousands of miles away and maintaining a complicated relationship with the Royal Family, their presence in Britain could create new opportunities for family contact while also raising questions about how their new life will fit alongside the institution they once served.
For now, however, the Sussexes appear determined to maintain their status as private members of the Royal Family. Their return to Britain may bring them physically closer to Harry’s family, but it does not appear to signal a return to official royal duties.
