FORMER ROYAL AIDE JAMIE LOWTHER-PINKERTON REMAINS A RESPECTED FIGURE AMID DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE ROYAL FAMILY

Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton has spent much of his career working quietly behind the scenes, yet his influence on the modern Royal Family continues to attract attention years after he left royal service. A former British Army officer and senior royal aide, Lowther-Pinkerton served as principal private secretary to Prince William and Prince Harry during a formative period in their lives, helping guide both princes through military careers, increasing public responsibilities and major personal milestones. Although he has never publicly positioned himself as a participant in family disputes, his longstanding relationships with both brothers have led some royal commentators to suggest that he remains one of the few figures trusted by each of them.
Lowther-Pinkerton was appointed principal private secretary to the two princes in 2005, bringing extensive military experience to the role after serving with the Irish Guards and the Special Air Service (SAS). His responsibilities extended well beyond arranging engagements. He coordinated official schedules, advised the princes on public duties and played a key role in managing important transitions as they assumed greater responsibilities within the Royal Family. During his tenure, he also helped oversee aspects of both princes’ military careers, supporting William as he trained and later served as a search and rescue pilot while assisting Harry throughout his military service, including deployments connected with Afghanistan.

His work also coincided with significant moments in Prince William’s personal life. Lowther-Pinkerton helped manage preparations surrounding William’s marriage to Catherine in 2011, one of the most widely watched royal weddings of the century. Over time, he developed a close professional relationship with the future Princess of Wales as she adjusted to life within the Royal Family. In recent interviews, he has spoken warmly about Catherine, describing her as someone who adapted thoughtfully to public life. Their enduring friendship has been reflected in later years, including William’s decision to appoint Lowther-Pinkerton as one of Prince George’s godparents, a role that illustrates the family’s continuing confidence in him.
Prince Harry has also spoken positively about Lowther-Pinkerton in the past. In his memoir Spare, Harry described him with admiration, recalling his military background and direct manner. One episode Harry recounted involved Lowther-Pinkerton deciding not to share certain documents relating to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, because he believed doing so would not benefit Harry. According to Harry’s own account, he accepted that judgment, reflecting the trust that existed between them during those years. While Harry’s memoir was critical of several aspects of royal life and some former palace officials, Lowther-Pinkerton was largely portrayed in a positive light.
Despite continuing public interest in the relationship between William and Harry, Lowther-Pinkerton has consistently avoided commenting in detail on family matters. In a recent interview, he expressed affection for both princes while declining to speculate about private issues. Speaking about Harry, he said he remained “very fond” of him and described himself as “a perennial optimist.” His remarks reflected a measured approach that has characterized his public appearances since leaving palace service. Rather than discussing disagreements, he has generally focused on acknowledging the strengths of both brothers and emphasizing their individual qualities.

Today, Lowther-Pinkerton has turned much of his attention toward a different chapter of his life. Living in Suffolk, he has begun pursuing writing, with the publication of his novel Beyond the Edge of Light. Drawing inspiration from elements of his mother’s experiences during the Second World War, the novel explores themes of courage, duty and personal sacrifice. He has explained that while the story is fictional, it was influenced by real family history, including his mother’s work during the war and her later service connected with British intelligence. The project marks a significant departure from his years inside royal households, allowing him to focus on creative work while remaining largely outside public debate.
Although commentators occasionally speculate about whether respected former advisers could help bridge differences within the Royal Family, there has been no indication that Lowther-Pinkerton has been asked to play such a role. His own public comments have remained careful, emphasizing respect, optimism and discretion rather than offering opinions about private family relationships. His legacy therefore rests less on speculation about future events and more on the years he spent helping prepare two future generations of the monarchy for public service. Whether remembered as a trusted adviser, a distinguished military officer or now as a novelist, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton continues to be viewed as a figure whose influence was shaped by quiet professionalism rather than public attention.
